The first unit composed of volunteers from Florida was organized on November 12, 1944 at Camp Blanding near Satellite Beach. At its formation, it consisted of 144 men under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Clarence Wohlgemuth. The TAR was disbanded after the war but its legacy lives on today as part of the Florida National Guard. The TAR has been used by both Republican and Democratic Presidents since 1941 and is still an important force in local society today.

On September 14, 1861, the first regular army regiment was activated in the state of New York City as the 3rd Brigade 4th Regiment U.S. Volunteer Infantry under command of General Ambrose Burnside. During World War I, the National Guard played an effective role in support of American forces and helped secure victory for America against Great Britain and Germany. In 1948, President Harry Truman created The National Guard Bureau to provide leadership and direction for all aspects of the Guardsmen’s Association which became known as The National Guard Bureau (NGB). Today, over 250 agencies participate in NGB including military service branches such as the Army Reserve; Air Force Reserve; Marines; Coast Guard; andSpecialty units created to meet specific needs such as paratroopers or SWAT teams. The history of gifts to members of The National Guard Bureau can be traced back to 1868 when Congress passed an act giving gift certificates to men who rendered distinguished service while serving with volunteer organizations within their states or localities (New York Constitution 1868). These certificates were soon followed by gold medals (1876), silver medals (1887), and bronze medals (1910). Medals were given out at special functions such as county fairs and state conventions throughout America. This tradition continued until 1946 when legislation changed gift laws so that any citizen could receive a medal without having to serve with a organization or render distinguished service within their community/state/country. Currently, there are more than 1300 different types of medals available depicting everything from valor during wartime efforts through peacetime contributions to public service excellence! Medals may be presented at ceremonies honoring individuals such as officers who have served our nation in a high rank or soldiers who have fought for us during wars past and present. Medals can also be awarded for heroism on battlefields during wartime missions where members have displayed exceptional courage above and beyond what is typical among other troops operating under similar conditions! Awards may also commemorate commemorative events such as anniversaries or 100 years since an event occurred!
