Satellite Beach's economy is based on seafood and tourism. The first known permanent settlement in what is now Satellite Beach was made by Native Americans in 1794. A survey of the area taken in 1837 determined that there were no settlements or villages within the present-day boundaries of Satellite Beach then or since. In 1892, an act to establish a county seat for Monroe County was passed and a new post office called "Satellite" was established at the mouth of Gulf Stream creek. This name did not stick and in 1903 it was changed to "Satellite beach". In 1907, a post office named "Beach Haven" was established at the foot of Broadwalk avenue which still remains as its mailing address today. On July 14, 1928, Hurricane Andrew roared ashore near Jupiter with winds up to 185 mph (290 km/h). It destroyed most of Naples and much of Jupiter including satellite beach where over 100 people died from storm damage alone according to state records..Aftermath: Many homes were lost but also some valuable fishing businesses opened up as fishermen could not find suitable groundfish stocks elsewhere after so many homes were destroyed inland By 1932 there were only two houses left standing on Broadwalk Avenue - one being occupied by Mrs Burt who ran a general store out front while her husband worked as an engineer back at home; they sold their house when they retired In 1933 – just before prohibition ended – another post office called "Pineapple Key" popped up onshore about 2 miles due south of current day Satellite Beach along US Highway 441; this place continued to be used until early 1956 when all 5 posts within that mile burned down together with Pineapple Key itself because they had been built too close together without proper separation among them . By 1945 there were just 3 houses remaining on Broadwalk Avenue - all three being occupied by military families stationed along either side of I-95 between Naples and Jacksonville Another small community soon sprung up around what is now Neptune’s Grotto adjacent to Sunrise Golf Course off I-95 - Little Bayou community formed during this time as more residents vacated their property towards Sunrise golf course due to fear thatrewith hurricane threats from Irma later that year... By 1951 satellite beach had shrunk down significantly with only 10 households living there altogether ; most residents now lived inland near Naples .
