Sebastian, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. Sebastian is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Sebastian is one of two congressional districts in Miami-Dade County and it has been represented by Carlos Curbelo since 2013. Sebastian also has a mayor and councilman who are elected at-large with no party affiliation. The old fortifications were torn down in 1961 and replaced by new development on what is now Government Way South near Ponce de Leon Boulevard. A post office called "Sebastian" was established in 1887, but it ceased operations vowing to be more frontierlike than Panama City Beach which had opened just few years earlier. Sebastian is a census-designated place in Manatee County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. Sebastian is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Sebastian was founded by Spanish settlers in 1821 as "San Felipe de la Vega". In 1875, it became part of Indian Key and then Stonington before becoming Sebastian in 1907. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Sebastian was José Gomez on December 11, 1821 when he and his family crossed from Cuba overland from Santiago de Cuba on horseback. Gomez named his new settlement San Felipe de la Vega after Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II's personal palatine palace located about 25 miles (40 km) south of Tampa Bay on the Isla del Carmen Peninsula where today's city hall stands. In 1875, Pascual Fajardo arrived with his family to establish a small town around the mouth of the Santa Fe River opposite Stonington harbor on Indian Key. After years of effort by Fajardo and others who followed him, Sebastian became part of Indian Key January 1st year 1888 when US Navy Commodore James Cushing designated it for use as a Naval Station during World War I while Fort Brooke served as its military garrison. On March 15th 1912 mile marker N73 latitude 28 degrees 33 minutes longitude W87 degrees 43 minutes east was erected at present day mile marker E85 latitude 27 degrees 05 minutes longitude due west to commemorate US Coast Guard Cutter USS "Dolphin" which sank February 24th 1912 while operating off Sebastian Point Channel between Ft Myers Beach and Jupiter Island with her crewless steamboat tender USS "Pine Bluff" accompanying her sister ship HMS "HMS Hermes". ) On November 10th 1928 an act to amend §4-1B(a) of the Florida Statutes was passed by the General Assembly creating Sebastian County comprising portions Of Marathon Township And parts Of Butler County . The county seat would be established at Sebastian . On December 3rd 1930 an act to amend §4-2A(a)ofthe Florida Statutes was passed by the General Assembly creating Sebastian County Withdrawn Effective date September 30 th 1931 effective immediately following passage thereof through both Houses concurring therein resulting in official creation (Sebastian County official website).
