One major issue facing Sebastian residents today is that they rely almost exclusively on agriculture for their food supply - which has led to significant impacts on the local environment. The nearby plantation industry has been largely replaced by modern farming methods since World War II, destroying much of the natural resources that once supported this community. This situation has also had a negative impact on education: many students now attend schools outside of Sebastian because there is no other option available within commuting distance.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Sebastian has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2 km²), all land. The first inhabitants in Sebastian were Creek Indians who lived on Indian Island and adjacent lands until they were relocated to what is now Sarasota County in 1795 by Spanish colonists seeking to establish control over key trade routes between the Spanish colonies and Africa. The Creek Indians occupied much of what is now Sebastian from about 1800 through 1810 when white man founded Fort Moultrie on Coosa River near present day Greenacres. A year later, Captain John Stroud moved his military garrison from Indian Island to Fort Moultrie after he completed construction of an impregnable stockade that functioned as one of America's earliest forts. Indian traders and settlers gathered at this site during the years 1820-1830; however, no permanent habitation was established until 1837 when J. D.. Lawlor built himself a two story log cabin on red earth risers overlooking Elliott Bayou opposite Old Point Comfort Plantation where he became known as "Mr." Lawlor".
