Sebastian, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 804 at the 2010 census. Sebastian is home to the University of Miami and its "Bowl Game" stadium, the Miami Marlins baseball team, and has been known as a fashionable shopping destination for high-end fashion designers and their customers since the early 21st century. Sebastian's nickname is "The Gateway to South Florida." The area that now makes up Sebastian was first settled by African Americans during the 1820s as part of what would become Seminole Territory. A group of white men from New York City bought land in 1830 and named it after Captain John Sebastian who had fought for Spain in Cuba against American forces under General José de la Cruz y Costilla. In 1837 they sold additional land to Juan Pablo Mora y Pardo which became known as Rancho San Pablo. In 1840 Captain John Sebastian's son Jameson purchased 2,500 acres (1 km2) near what is now downtown Sebastian from Manuel Diaz Valdez on behalf of his father Jameson himself. He named this tract Rancho Santiago de las Américas (later renamed Rancho San Pablo). It was through this purchase that John Sebastian became one of the earliest landowners in present-day Miami-Dade County. There are several sources that claim that Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto visited Plantation Santiago on his trip downFlorida Bay in 1565 when he observed Indians living among these lands; however no evidence exists to support this claim either beyond circumstantial evidence or conjecture only. In 1847 Doctor Francisco Xavier Menchaca built a small cabin on a peninsula formed by two branches of Biscayne Creek just north of modern day Manalapan which eventually became known as Menchaca House State Park after him and his wife Guadalupe Posada Menchaca were instrumental in developing it into an amusement park called "Tampa Park". The museum was organized as the New York Maritime Museum on April 15, 1907 by Mayor John F. Kennedy with the intent to foster public interest in maritime matters. Sebastian, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County,Florida. It was founded by Spanish colonists in 1786 as San Sebastian de la Vega. The name comes from the nearby hill of San Sebastián and the river that flows through it. The town is named for General Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who arrived there with his army on February 8, 1786. Sebastian became a municipality in 1892 and was made an unincorporated community in 1924. In 1947, it became part of the newly created Miami-Dade County. In 2003, Sebastian received its own ZIP code which made it one of the first towns in Miami-Dade County to have its own ZIP code. The economy of Sebastian has been mostly agricultural until recently; however, recent growth has come from tourism and business across a wide range of industries including information technology services and software development services. The town is home to two hospitals: Stonington Memorial Hospital and Jackson Memorial Hospital - both are affiliated with University Health System - as well as several private medical practices along with several schools including Sebastian High School (known historically as "The Academy"), Holy Cross Catholic School (formerly known as "Stoneybrook"), and Catholic High School (now called "Miami Dade").
