Sebastian, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 2,846 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sebastian was founded in 1892 by Hernando De Soto. The town was originally named after Captain Sebastian Fernandez who had helped to capture Fernandes Key from Spanish pirates on November 26, 1795. de Soto named the post for him because he had seen a sign that said "Santiago,Florida" and it looked very similar to Captain Fernandez's ship. In 1903 the name changed to Sebastian after John Denton Sebastian who donated land for a school and around which the town began to grow. By 1925 there were 3 churches and 100 homes with a total of 158 residents in Sebastian. In 1941 during World War II Sebastian became part of the United States Army Air Forces when it was activated as Allied Expeditionary Force Twelfth Air Force Headquarters AAF Station Pedro Site Florida 914-5 (now Humphreys Airport). In 1945 following World War II Sebastian became a U.S. military airfield known as McCoy Field #2 which served as reserve airfield for Palm Beach County until its closure in 1957 then again between 1957-1972 as McCoy Field #1 serving Kissimmee area before closed completely and replaced by Humphreys Airport which opened on May 15th 1972 In 1990 during Hurricane Andrew damage resulted in loss of life due to storm surge water intrusion into homes along State Road 727 nears Stonington Landing Compound occupants were relocated but most families never recovered their belongings or home values since those days until 2009 when state efforts finally resulted in some hope for restoration thanks to private donations including Landmark Development Incubating plans forFull Restoration completed on October 21st 2013 The cost is now Estimated at over $40 Million dollars
