The history of the Sebastian Naval Shipyard can be traced back to 1892 when the first telegraph line between Tampa, Florida and Key West was installed. The need for a navy shipyard became apparent as the United States Navy began building warships in response to World War I. The first naval ship built at the shipyard was USS Constitution, which was launched in April of 1917. In 1922, the navy turned its attention to submarines and began construction of the USS Cleland at Sebastian. This submarine yard produced some of America’s most famous submarines such as USS Thresher and USS Nautilus. In 1951, Admiral John C. Stennis led Operation Neptune’s Spear during which twenty-six American submarines were sunk by North Korean forces off South Korea. In 1969, the navy transferred ownership of the shipyard to Sebastian City Schools District #1. Since then, it has been operated by various city departments including: Police Department; Parks and Recreation; Fire Department; Street Lighting; Building Inspection; Planning Commission; Municipal Court Services Committee & Code Enforcement Officer; School Boardmember #2 & Treasurer/Tax Collector/ Auditor/ Secretary

The Sebastian Naval and Air Station was established in 1942 as the first naval station in Florida. The Naval Air Station at Sebastian provided logistical support for the war effort, including providing fighter planes and bombers to the Allies. In 1946, the Naval Air Station was renamed Sebastian Naval Airdrome and it remained an operational naval air station until 1971. In 1978, a new hangar was built at stations on FSU's campus which became home to the now retired Coast Guard cutter "Clyde" (CG-5). The facility also served as a base for US Navy helicopter pilots flying missions into/out of Guantanamo Bay Cuba during Operation Neptune's Spear. In 1981, Sebastian Municipal Airport opened with two runways - 14L/28R and 14R/28L - serving primarily general aviation users. In 1984, the Coastsguard Cutter "Olympic" (CG-3) arrived at Sebastian NAS from Jacksonville NAS after being acquired by then Mayor Bob Goldstein along with six other Coast Guard cutters to serve as part of his city's response to efforts by Cuba to reclamation land surrounding Guantanamo Bay. In 1992, construction began on a new $27 million terminal building that would house both passenger terminals used by airlines such as Delta Airlines and American Airlines as well as cargo terminals used by both sea cargo operators such as CMA CGM and Lloyds TSB Cargo Logistics Inc.. The project was completed in 1995 and saw the addition of three parallel runways - 15L/29R, 15L/27R & 17L/35L - giving Sebastian NAS its current configuration of nine runways divided into three sectors totaling 340 hectares or almost one acre each. This expansion not only increased runway capacity but also improved access for passengers and commercial airline traffic which has continued uninterrupted ever since.
Sebastian, Florida is a town located in Duval County, Florida. It was incorporated on February 18, 1907. Sebastian had a population of 196 as of the 2010 census. Sebastian is the county seat for Duval County. The town has a population of 8,711 as of the 2018 census. The name "Sebastian" comes from Spanish and means "safe place." The earliest mention of Sebastian was in 1798 when Captain Manuel Reyes visited the area and noted that there were few settlements other than Key West and St Augustine due to pirates being active in the area at that time. In 1821, Brigadier General James Wilkinson founded what is now Jacksonville on Bayou Teche between Atascosa Creek and Spanish Key. He named it after his old home province of Spains) - Santiago de Cuba - but no evidence exists to support this claim . After Wilkinson's death in 1825, his widow sold part ownership inJacksonville to Senator John Clements who renamed it after himself- Clements Landing In 1827 Commodore John D'Urbain took possession of St Augustine for Spain following their victory in the Napoleonic Wars D'Urbain decided to move the Mexican garrison out of St Augustine so he built Fort Moselle near present day Sebastian In 1829 Captain José Félix de la Peña y Valdés captured Roque Soto off Cape San Antonio while sailing under Captains Don Tristán Menéndez y Arellano and Hernando Ponce de León with supplies bound for Havana Later that year Captain Fernando Guerra recaptured Roque Soto from De la Peña y Valdés thanks to reinforcements landed by Commodore John Smith during Operation Delta Watch which ended on December 12th 1830 . For many years thereafter La Pena y Valdés was considered one of America's most dangerous pirates because he managed to capture several vessels including two American warships Bounty (1787) and Constitution (1801). On October 10th 1840 capitán Francisco Nieto Ezcurral commanding Puerto Rico squadron attacked USS United States at Yuma River about 20 miles south east coast of Isla Catalina about 25 miles north west coastof Vieques Island

Sebastian, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Escambia County, Florida, United States. Sebastian was founded by the brothers Gabriel and Francisco de la Hoya on October 6, 1854. The first post office was established in Sebastian on November 3, 1855. In 1907, the town had a population of 100 people. It has since declined to its current population of 30 people. The first settler in Sebastian was Gabriel de la Hoya who arrived with his family from Leonida Square Mexico on October 6th 1854. He took up land at what is now mile marker 9 on US-1 south of present day Sebastian. The second settler to arrive in Sebastian was Francisco de la Hoya who settled near what is now junction street and state road 97 east of town on February 5th 1857. The most recent resident to live in Sebastian is Pamela Ahern who moved there from Clearwater BeachFL on July 1st 2009
