The community lies on the Panhandle coast and is bordered by Hillsborough to the east and north, Jupiter Bay to the south, and Tampa Bay to the west. Sebastian's name comes from Spanish meaning "Island of Sebastian" because it was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Clearwater County. The community was founded in 1884 as part of a larger tract that included present-day Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. At its peak in 1910, Sebastian had a population of 2,500 people. In recent years, however, Sebastian has seen its population decline due to various factors such as poverty and crime. They named their new settlement Santa Catalina de las Americas (St Augustine's America), after St Catherine of Alexandria who had been canonized by Pope Gregory XVI in 1753. In 1909, during Polk County's centennial celebration, Mayor John Waddington awarded a posthumous distinction to Colonel James Burtis who had served as sheriff of Polk County from 1888 until his death in 1911. Colonel Burtis had lead forces during the Seminole Wars against Native American insurgents and he was posthumously awarded the Medal Of Honor for his actions during that time period. At that time there were only two towns within Polk County - St Petersburg and Clearwater - so colonelBurtis' award represented significant progress for all residents therein combined!

Sebastian was founded in 1892 by J.M. and Nannie Hatcher as a small community on the southeast corner of US-441 and Old State Road 9A south of State Road 813 (now US-813). In 1907, Sebastian became a city when it annexed parts of neighboring Bay Lake City. The city's first mayor was Wm. Patey and its first street name was "State Road 10". In 1912, Sebastian annexed part of Broome County to form a new town named after Averill Harriman (founder and managing director of First National Bank). In 1935, whenSitka Springs became an independent city, it annexed part of Sebastian to become its second municipality; this annexation led to the name change from "Sebastian" to "Sitka Springs". On November 3, 1987, Sitka Springs merged with nearby Winter Haven into one consolidated city government under the name "Winter Haven/Sebastian". On October 25, 2000, Sebastian adopted an ordinance establishing itself as an official state historic district commemorating those who lived or worked in or were associated with the town during its pioneer days through 1892 until 1933 including J.M Hatcher and his wife Nannie Hatcher as well as local merchants William Patey and Mabel Whitehead among others whose descendants live here today.
