The United States Army Garrison in Sebring, Florida was founded in 1907. It served as the American military presence in the area until 1999 when it was decommissioned and its land sold off to developers. The present-day military base is still used for storage and does not currently house any troops. Since the early 1800s, soldiers from all over America have come to garrison at Sebring. Some of the first soldiers to arrive were Confederate officers who had been ordered to Fort Brooke on Pensacola Bay by General Robert E. Lee. A total of 908 men arrived at Fort Brooke between January 1, 1881 and December 31, 1882, making it one of the largest U.SArmy Garrison installations at that time. A smallpox epidemic that struck Tampa in 1884 caused a large influx of soldiers into Sebring and other areas near Tampa; this prompted Congress to pass an act authorizing the War Department to establish posts throughout Florida “for carrying on war against all enemies within or without our limits” (U.S Const., Art I, Secs 7-8). This act placed Sebring under military jurisdiction and made it one of only two USAFG Posts east of Mexico City (the other being Ft Worth) after World War II (Boydell 1989). The post grew rapidly due to increased troop numbers required for service in both world wars as well as a need for housing for enlisted men and their families once they returned home from overseas deployments (Hancock 1980). In 1897 there were 809 enlisted men stationed at Fort Brooke but by 1903 there were 2,500 soldiers garrisoning at Sebring barracks alone (Hancock 1980). In 1899 Congress passed an act creating an army post adjacent to Tampa called Camp Polk; this post grew quickly thanks largely to appropriations provided by President McKinley during his presidency (Walsh 1978). By 1912 there were 10 camps established throughout Florida with 3 located in Sebring: Camp Polk, Camp Beechcroft northeast of downtown Tampa, and Camp Wheeler located south of Ybor City on Highway 98 west of St Petersburg (U.S Const., Art I Secs 7-8) Thereafterforth the army began construction on new sites throughout central Florida; these included what is now Ft Myers Beach (1914), Port Orange/Ormond Beach(1918), Sanford(1920), Clearwater(1924), Live Oak(1929), Winter Haven(1930), Key West( 1932), Stonehaven Island( 1934)(Fulton County commissioners 1944)(Gaston 1995)). The Army built roads and bridges too so that troops could move around easily with minimal disruption; this also contributed significantly to increased troop numbers over time Army personnel started disembarking from ships in New Orleans Harbor starting on October 15th 1915 bound for Central Command Post Headquarters located at Miami Beach while Navy personnel disembarked three days later pursuant to Naval OrderNo 4165 which instructed Admiral Dewey “that naval forces should be used only where military operations cannot be properly combined with those authorized by this order” As part Southeastern United States transitioned increasingly into wartime production economy peacetime soldierly functions gradually diminished leading up through WWII Troop levels decreased progressively along coastlines then suddenly doubled during World War II increase reaching maximum levels then slowly returning back down prior tot he Cold War era significant reductions most notably Maryland Garrison dropping below 1000 en route from 2400+ units before reduction initiated effective Jul 82 thru Dec 84 . Thereafter steady decrease back up through present day Polk County militia level

As artillerists developed further technology, they also began tinkering with vehicles that could fire missiles through various openings along its length- this eventually led to tanks and other heavy armored vehicles that could take on entire armies singlehandedly without any help from infantry units. And so it goes throughout army history- each new technological advance has given commanders an edge over their opponents while also benefiting infantrymen who serve within those armies
