Sebring is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida and is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Miami metropolitan area. It lies on a small peninsula that separates Lake Okeechobee from Jupiter Island. The first Europeans to visit Sebring were Spanish missionaries in 1514 and 1521 who named it Santiago de Cuba after St. James Cathedral in Havana, Cuba. The name has been used by various people since then including the United States military during World War II as an encampment for troops training near Fort Myers Beach before being renamed for General George Custer's last battle site about 25 miles (40 km) east of Fort Myers Beach. Seborga was founded by Pedro Menendez on June 3, 1892 as a result of his purchase of land from Juana Escobar y Gómez de la Torre.
