The Sebring National Guard was organized on December 3, 1941 as the Florida Army National Guard. On November 10, 1942, it was redesignated the Florida Army Coast Guardsman. The Guard's first unit stationed in Sebring was the 1st/5th Battalion, 5th Regiment, Coast Guardsmen. On October 26 of that year, the battalion moved to Stonington and began training for World War II. The battalion joined up with other units of the state guard on February 9, 1943 and were activated as a regiment within the state guard on March 2nd. The 1st/5th Battalion was re-designated as Company A (1st/5th Regiment) on May 8th and began operations with its new unit at Fort Brooke Beach. When war began in Europe in September 1939, all soldiers of Florida were mobilized into active duty; however Company A did not join until after Pearl Harbor when they were called to active duty in south Florida along with other units from across the state. It is interesting to note that there are no records of any gifts given by citizens or businesses to members of the National Guard during this time period; instead most donations came from military veterans who had served in WWI or WWII. Once war became an official part of America, donations increased exponentially from individuals and businesses alike due to patriotism and sense of responsibility for one's country. Throughout 1940-1941 alone numerous donations were made including $2 thousand donation by Mrs. Harry Sizemore which funded film production for local theater company; $3 thousand gift by Mrs. Jerald Crain which financed repairs to barracks at Ft Brooke Beach; $4 thousand gift by Mrs., Maurice Goudreau which subsidized groceries for troops stationed at Ft Brooke Beach; additional gifts totaling over $10 thousand were given throughout 1941 between civilians and government officials such as Mayor Lenny Bruce who collected food items dropped off by residents at his office building various times during month; Colonel John Fenton who contributed ten truckloadsof gasoline necessary for navy ships moored offshore at Haines City Marina; also many businesses donated goods such as cases of beer being delivered free to Ft Brooke beach garrison;; even a group of high school students raised money through bake sales while their teacher hosted a lemonade stand outside their classroom door! Furthermore individual memberships could be purchased online or over phone without leaving home which gave soldiers access to equipment and support right where they stood! Sebring is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 176 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sebring-Bradenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Sebring were the Spanish in 1565, and they named it "San Pedro de la Ribera" (St. Philip's Ridge). The village only grew after Fort Myers was established on the same site in 1837 as an artillery fortification to protect Miami Bay from French and Indian attacks. In 1847, a group of American businessmen left Jacksonville for St. Petersburg with business plans to establish a cotton plantation there but soon realized that they would need more than just slaves to run their plantations; they needed white labor also because of shipping costs associated with transporting goods inland from Africa and Asia overland. They sent word back to Jacksonville for some Americans who had been working on their plantations in Georgia to come down and help them set up shop in Ft. Myers proper; by September 1, 1848 all fifty Americans had arrived and started work on what became known as Santa Clara Plantation. The Santa Clara Plantation area has been home to many notable people throughout its history including James Ayer (the founder of Ayer & Company), Colonel John Smith (founder of Trinity College), Drs.. Jerald Eppley and Roy Truly who developed Eppley Medical Center which now employs over 1,500 physicians across thirty-eight states—one hundred percent locally trained—and three thousand nurses! Sebring also played host to President Jimmy Carter when he visited Tampa during his campaign for president in 1984; Local Mayor Bob Buckhorn attended this event too! Today, we still celebrate Flag Day here every 2nd Saturday of May with community events like BBQs/fairs/picnics etc., thanks again Sun Coast Railroaders for making our town possible! We have beautiful downtown full of shops, restaurants and galleries while our nice sized park provides plenty of space for playing football or biking etc., examples are: Miracle Mile Park near Gulfstream Corporate Mall - one million sq ft!, Brown University - two buildings on campus - both university campuses have professional sports teams- men's & women's soccer teams- field hockey team which won state championships last year (!), Miramar mall has an indoor arena capable of seating 7000 people called 'The Venetian' which opened in early 2017...seems like everything goes well here today despite tough times during the Great Recession...
