The first Europeans to visit what is now Sebring were French missionaries in the early 19th century. The town was founded by WILLIAM TAYLORS as an agricultural center on a small island in the St Johns River. In 1835, Beechey and Company established a salt works here and renamed it Taylorsville after WILLIAM TAYLORS' father-in-law ROBERT BEECHEY. By 1845, over 400 people lived here; the salt works closed about 1840 due to competition from inland salt mines. In 1865, JOSEPH FERGUSON controlled most of Duval County and proposed that Sebring be made its county seat because he saw potential for growth thereabouts. A referendum approved this idea but no action was taken until 1870 when James LEE moved his coffee plantation from Sumter to new land west of Sebring and applied for tax exemption under the Floridian Mercantile Exemption Law which allowed businesses with more than $200 worth of goods imported annually to qualify for exemption. On December 15, 1870, Lee's coffee plantation became known as "The Plantation" and soon thereafter developed into one ofDuval County's largest cotton plantations with 5 miles (8 km) of roads leading to it from various points aroundSebring - making it one of the most important commercial areas in Peninsula County during the late 1800s and early 1900s." This sugarcane plantation helped build up what is now downtown Sebring while also providing jobs for many locals during those years."

Sebring, Florida is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,915 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to enter Sebring were French colonists who founded a fort on the site in 1795. The post office was established in 1837 and named for George Sebrin, a U.S. congressman from Alabama who served as commissioner of Indian Affairs for Polk County from 1839 to 1845. A cotton gin and gristmill were built here in 1865 by John Ransom and others under contract with the Union Mill Company; these mills produced flour for local markets and also manufactured handkerchiefs, hats, shoes, drill bits and other items. In 1903 Sebring became part of the newly created county of Lake County when it was carved out of Polk County along with Marianna (now Miami), Killeen (now Fort Myers), Vedado (now Naples) and other towns east of Interstate 5 through legislation approved by Congress on February 3 that year. At this time there were only a few hundred residents in this sparsely populated rural area; but within 10 years many good churches had been built near Sebring including First Baptist Church which replaced an old sawmill/grindstone mill which had been destroyed by fire in 1886; Stroud Methodist Episcopal Church also erected after being burned down by arsonists in 1918; Presbyterian Churches Westlake Ave., around milepost #1 on SR 715 just north of town Center Rd., Trinity Episcopal Parish planted their first new tree - a spruce - outside their sanctuary back home before Christmas 1914 – becoming one of several such congregations located near Sebring during its growth as a busy commercial center during the Progressive Era In 1923–24 Clarence King began construction on what would become known as "King's Village" – later renamed "Old Town." This large brick residential development included more than 100 homes dating from the early 20th century including some dating to 1892 which still stand today King's Village came about because King leased land adjoining his Cotton Bowl Flour Mill from Manuel de la Vega y Luna until 1917 when he purchased it outright for $2 per acre . La Vega y Luna had operated this mill since 1800 producing harvested cornmeal used throughout Spain for breadmaking purposes according to Doña Isabel Peralta , widow of Captain José María Peralta who discovered maize growing wild near Tampa Bay some time after 1793 In 1925 King sold Old Town to Wm Hite Development Company Ltd.. who re-developed it into what is now known as South Park Avenue while keeping most of the original homes extant Hite Development Co.'s successor Atlantico Properties Incorporated developed much older homes around SE corner SE corner NW Corner 2nd Street & Jameson Road called "The Hill" subdivision starting circa 1970 until 1986 when all non-native houses were demolished following Hurricane Andrew . All remaining native residences are currently preserved within earshot ol' town center
