The Seminole Regiment of Florida was an infantry regiment of the United States Army during World War II. The regiment was mobilized in 1942 and served in the Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa campaigns. The regiment was redesignated as the 8th Infantry Regiment on 1 December 1945 and concurrently activated at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, as part of thepopular military program called "Gift" which gave soldiers from U.S. states that had declared war on Japan a gift of uniforms, weapons, and other equipment. The regiment deployed to Japan in August 1946 and fought in the Battle of Osaka against Imperial Japanese Army forces commanded by Field Marshal Nagumo Kiyomitsu. In 1948 the 8th Infantry Regiment relocated to Korea where it participated in exercises with American units before being returned to America for redeployment to Europe in 1951-1952. The regiment participated in NATO maneuvers in Belgium then France before arriving at Fort Dix, New Jersey for assignment to the 3rd Infantry Division there on 15 May 1952. The division's deployment arrived too late for participation in Operation Greek Fury which involved combined Soviet/American forces invading Greece; however, elements of the 8th Infantry Regiment helped suppress Soviet troops near Athens during this engagement. Following its return home from Europe the 8th Infantry moved through battalion rotations between Fort Lewis (Washington) until its activation at Fort Polk ( Louisiana) on 17 October 1955 as part of Readiness Command's 10th Mountain Division Training Center Program Phase IVA the regiment deployed via Marine Corps amphibious assault ships landing them ashore at Shuri Inlet off Okinawa on 7 April 1958 following years effort by Marines lead by Rear Admiral Frederic Janssen Lieutenant General James Mattis USMC Commander Task Force 58 the regiment also provided security for a U2 spy plane flying over Japan during this time

Seminole is a census-designated place located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,724 at the 2010 census. Seminole is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Seminole comes from the Choctaw word "sem" meaning "place where water flows," and "nole" meaning "a warrior." The first white settlers in what is now Seminole County arrived in 1795 aboard USS Ponce. They named their new land Nacoochee Key after a chief of theirs who had died during an expedition to explore the area. The first school in what is now Seminole County was organized on November 4, 1836 by John Cavanaugh and other early pioneers. A Methodist church was built on what is now Lake Ranger Road in 1837 and became known as Baptist Church #1. In 1839, the first store opened up on Mockingbird Lane near present day US Highway 762/Seminole Boulevard in Sanford. One year later, a courthouse was built on Seminar Road by Jno Burchill and others with help from Captain James Wilkinson of HMS Beagle fame. By 1850, there were six churches and sixty residents living within modern-day Seminole County boundaries
