Seminole, Florida is a town in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,844 at the 2010 census. Seminole is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also included in the Daytona Beach–Orlando Combined Statistical Area. Seminole was founded by white settlers in 1835 and named for General George Washington's father-in-law, Thomas Macdonough Sr., who had been killed during the Indian War two years earlier. The first school in what is today Seminole opened in 1839. In 1846, General James Kenedy purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of land southwest of present day Seminole from Macdonough's widow for $2 per acre ($ Today it would be about $ ). Fort King George was built on this land to protect macdonald's property from raids by neighboring Seminoles led by Timucua chief Osceola. In 1861, following the Civil War and after several failed attempts to gain statehood from Florida due to lack of support from both political parties, President Abraham Lincoln approved a bill granting Seminole Statehood on November 3, 1865; however this legislation never made it through Congress because Unionists boycotted its passage and formed their own state government instead. On July 25th 1912 Governor Blount vetoed Senate Bill 6 which would have granted full citizenship to all Native Americans living within 2 miles (3 km) of any public square or courthouse in Florida without regard to race or color as specified in Ulysses S Grant's Executive Order 9 Walters v Blanding 400 US 335 (1896). The towns that now make up Sanford and Kissimmee were established as separate agricultural villages near Lake Okeechobee between 1907 and 1915 when developers decided that an area so rich with mineral resources could not only be developed but also serve as a training ground for agricultural workers needed for World War I production plants at nearby Cocoa Beach and Jacksonville Naval Air Station . The history of Seminole starts with the Native Americans who inhabited this area beginning in the 1500s. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Seminole County were French colonists who founded Fort Caroline on the western coast ofFlorida in 1763. In 1819, Spanish settlers arrived and began to settle in what is now Seminole County. After Spain lost control of Cuba and its colonies during the American Revolution, many Cuban refugees came to Florida and found work among the Spanish colonists. As a result, some people from Havana began calling themselves "Corseños" or "Seminoles." Eventually, these terms came to be associated with all Spaniards living in Florida before it was annexed by America. While there are many stories about early pioneers and their families, one story that has been passed down through generations is about Josefina Peña-Ortiz (1830-1920), an AfricanAmerican woman who worked as a maidservant for a family of wealthy Spaniards. When her employer died suddenly, she took his place and continued working until she became pregnant at age 25. She then left Spain for Tampa Bay with her child and started life anew as an American woman. With such an impressive backstory, it's no wonder that Josefina Peña-Ortiz was considered one of America's most celebrated black women during her time. In 1907, when Seminole County was created out of part of Hillsborough County, much attention focused on plantation owners living near Tampa Bay as opposed to those living closer to Orlando or Jacksonville. Because land located within present-day Seminole County had been used by both groups for centuries prior to European contact, it wasn't difficult for white settlers to identify Indian artifacts dating backto pre-contact times which could be found throughout the area today.
