Seminole, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Seminole County, Florida. The community was founded by white settlers in 1835 as a plantation named Fort Mose. The Seminole Tribe of Florida was organized on December 6, 1835 by Captain John C. Smith as a military expedition to defeat the Seminoles who had settled in present-day Florida. The tribe numbered about 1,500 so the initial campaign resulted in many deaths and capture of many Seminoles. In 1838, General Andrew Jackson led an army against the tribe, which he successively defeated in the Battle of Okeechobee (1839), Battle of Hernando County Bridge (1841), and Second Seminole War at Fort Tallahassee (1842). However, most of the Tribe's members chose to relocate northward following these defeats and operations. By 1850, less than half a million acres remained within Indian Territory; all but a few hundred people were living among their ancestors within Indian Country.
