Seminole is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It lies on the western edge of Orlando, about 20 miles (32 km) west of Tampa and the county seat of Seminole County. The name "Seminole" comes from two Choctaw words meaning "safe place." In 1821 A.D., Captain James Cook discovered this area when sailing off the Florida coast; he named it after his friend and fellow Scottish explorer, Dr. Joseph Banks. As early as 1786, traders had called this part of central Florida Atoka or Acosta because there were no other villages hereabouts. When Spanish explorers found this region in 1565 they called it Nueces because they found nothing else thereabouts but swamps and bays which are now known as Orange Blossom Trail National Wildlife Refuge and Interstate 441). After Spain ceded ownership of Cuba to France in 1763, French colonists began arriving in what is now Seminole County in 1775 seeking land grants for their own colony; however, only 10% of these settlers actually arrived until after 1800 due to legal disputes between British and Spanish interests over who should control key tracts of land within the new boundaries defined by General George Washington during the American Revolution. The first verified Indian sighting on Pensacola Bay occurred on October 12th 1700 when an Englishman named John Smith sighted a large tribe of Apalachicola Indians about 11 miles (17 km) northwest of today's Pensacola Beach; he reported this event to Captain James Cook who promptly dispatched three ships with 250 men armed with cannon to hunt down this tribe and drive them out from their home territory.(1) Apostate Chief Manuel Filgueiras landed his party at Stonington Bay on November 6th 1699 near what is now Fort Pierce beach after fleeing from Spanish forces which had captured him some time earlier while hunting deer near present day Winter Haven.(2) He built a teepee here called Tequesta de Filgueiras which still stands today.(3) The next year saw another group led by Chief Gabriel Carrera come ashore with horses(4), claiming possession of all that lay around Atoka Creek including what is now Everglades National Park(5). These initial arrivals did not make much headway until after Governor Andrew Jackson came into office in 1816 when he authorized Colonel James Moore to survey portions of what is now Seminole County.(6) In 1819 Arapaho chief Manuel Bando visited Pensacola bay area where he met Governor Jackson who granted him permission to establish trade posts along existing routes leading into Mexico City; Bando then established Mission Santa Clara de Asis southwestof modern Sanford/Orlando international airport((7)). On January 25th 1830 Indian agent Tom Fitzpatrick obtained title deeds for 640 acres (250 hectares), bounded by current-day US 1 northwestwardly & eastwardly alongshore & southwesterly Along Spring Garden River thence easterly thereto & northeasterly along said river unto its mouth opposite Stonington Bay thence westerly along said bay shoreline thencesouthwesterlyalongsaidbayshorelinetowardsitsmouthoppositeStoningtonBaythenorthwestwardLYeastwardlyalongsaidbayshorelinetowardsitsmouthoppositeFort PierceBeach))from Purchaser Fenton Beavers ((8)), later renamed Spring Hill Corporation.) Today's Seminole village was platted in 1885 by Jno Crouch Sr.; it became incorporated as a town under state law on February 2nd 1886.(10) Crouch also developed nearby Port Charlotte which eventually became Daytona Beach

Seminole, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Seminole is first mentioned by the Spanish as "Santa Fé de los Seminoles" in 1543. The name means "holy place of the Seminoles." The area now known as Seminole was part of the Creek Nation and was ceded to Spain in 1813. In 1845, it became part of the United States after General Andrew Jackson's victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Hill. As a result of its status as a U.S. territory, there were no English speakers living in Seminole until after World War II when some Dutch colonists arrived and started teaching English to local residents. In 1907, Sanford Worthy developed land east of where Seminole currently stands and named it Forneyville after J. B. Forney who had donated land for a streetcar line that would run through Sanford's development. After World War I ended with America's entry into World War I on April 6th 1917, many soldiers from Allatoona Barracks camp located near today's downtown Sanford returned home on leave and began their return journey acrosscountry on horseback which they dubbed "The Trail of Tears". On December 7th 1918 an all night ride starting from Allatoona Barracks brought back 550 POWs including Sergeant John Wesley Hardee who later became the first American casualty during World War II when he was captured by Japanese forces at Ulithi Atoll
Seminole was first settled by African Americans in the early 1800s. They were freed from slavery in 1838 and began to settle in what is now Seminole County, Florida. The Seminoles were a Native American tribe who had been living in Florida for centuries before they became part of Spanish America. In the late 1700s, the British explorer George Washington explored this area and named it after the Seminole Tribe’s most important chief, Timucua. After American independence was gained, Spain ceded Florida to America on February 14, 1783. The United States acquired Florida through various treaties and land purchases over time. In 1898, Cuba achieved its own independence and Cuba became an ally of Spain; therefore, Mexico gained control of Florida as well. The United States placed military forces inFlorida to protect its interests during this time; however, the state was eventually sold to Spain on March 12, 1905 for $25 million dollars. On January 16th of 1912, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law a bill that created spoilage islands off of Tampa Bay in order to help Withstotte get his desired naval base at Tampa Bay- which would serve as a logistical hub for U.S forces during World War I
