In that year, two Dutchmen, Hendrik van Lennep and Cornelius Veldhuizen, opened a small shop on Indianola Street in what is now Sanford. The couple began brewing their own coffee and selling it direct to customers. Their first sale yielded a net profit of $2. In 1903, the Van Lenneps moved their business to Ocala and continued serving customers by ground shipping only beans from Holland. They also opened a café on International Parkway near US Highway 1. At this point, the coffee was being sold by weight or by bag of fresh beans. In 1916, the original Van Lennep Café burned down but reopened under new ownership with European-trained Ethiopian servants as waitstaff and brewers. The café served Ethiopian coffees until 1978 when it closed again due to economic reasons. However, evidence suggests that the cafe may have been open during World War II since parts of it still remain standing today! In 1945, Harry Nibble bought the business from its previous owners and started making gourmet coffee using his own blend of Arabica beans from Java and Ethiopia respectively. The Seminole Tribe of Florida is an American Indian tribe that has inhabited the area now known as Seminole County, Florida, since before European settlement. On November 1, 1835, Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola attacked a white settlement at Fort Mill in what is known as the First Seminole War. The war lasted three years and ended with the Treaty of Muscovy. The treaty resulted in the return of most of the Seminoles to Indian Territory and their eviction from Florida.
