The area around present-day Seminole became organized into townships on February 14th, 1907 when Stuart Township was created within Hillsborough Township following a referendum held that November. Seminole, Florida is a small town located in Seminole County, Florida. The population was 3,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg- Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first inhabited by Native Americans and was founded by Spanish settlers in 1795. The name Seminole is derived from the Samoyed word meaning "the people who go out on hunting expeditions." In 1834, Indian Chief Osceola led a raid against Fort Brooke which resulted in the death of about fifty white men and boys and the capture of many more. As a result of this attack, Congress passed an act that forbade Indians from living within two miles of any military installation or fortifications. This prohibition lasted until 1907 when it was repealed by an act of Congress due to lack of enforcement. In 1849, General James Wofford assumed command of Union forces during the Mexican-American War and tried to retake Santa Clara River for Mexico. After being defeated at Palo Alto Bridge, he withdrew his troops back to Tampa Bay and took up residence in what is now Seminole Heights. On July 10th, 1850, General Wofford surrendered at Gainesville after six weeks' siege without resistance and became prisoner of war with Mexican forces until his release in 1852 In 1865–1866 Confederate soldiers under General Jubal Early attacked Fort Brooke while it was still garrisoned by Union troops under Major Robert Ewing; no one was killed but much damage occurred throughout the fortification including loss or destruction of cannonballs and artillery pieces Afterward Seminoles formed their own militia force known as "The White Eagle Regiment" which fought against Reconstruction efforts following the Civil War The primary industry in early twentieth century Seminole community were agricultural pursuits such as cotton farming and cattle ranching; however these have gradually decreased over time due to competition from larger towns throughout central Florida One major event thatocused attention on Seminole during this period was World War II when many residents served in various units across America In recent years most residents have returned to their rural lifestyle although there are a few businesses providing local services such as ambulance service
