Seminole, Florida is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Florida. The population was 6,500 at the 2010 census. Seminole is bordered by Okaloosa County to the east, Duval County to the south, Clay County to the west, and Monroe County to the north. The name "Seminole" first appeared in deed books in 1692 as part of land given by Major Pierre-Jacques Chouteau to Captain James Cook for his surveying mission aboard Cook's ship Endeavour in 1779. An alternate spelling used by early settlers was "Shumaloe." In 1821, voters chose "Seminole" as their name for a town on Key Biscayne Island after they voted on a resolution seeking an island name that would be distinctive from Miami Beach and other nearby towns. The new town was established on May 1, 1821 with a population of eighty-two people. On November 3rd, 1907, Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of Key Biscayne Island and killed over seventy people when it struck landfall near Knott's Berry Farm just offshore from Seminole. Today only a small section ofKey Biscayne remains uninhabitable due to flooding caused by Hurricane Andrew each year. The area now known as Seminole has been rebuilt and renamed after hurricane recovery worker Laura Janssen who lost her life helping rebuild damage from Andrew A post office opened in Seminole on October 12th, 1893; it closed August 15th, 1899 due to lack of customers. A woodruff store opened in 1895; it closed 1924 due to competition from several supermarkets operating at that time within Seminole limits including Publix Supermarket and Woolworths Foods supermarket chain which operated adjacent stores at then known as Park Boulevard & Bayfront Drive). On July 1st 1902 construction began on what is now Seminarland Mall which became operational on December 10th 1904 with anchors Piggly Wiggly grocery store (later additions included Safeway store), Herberger’s Department Store (now Macy’s) and six local banks: First National Bank (now US Bank), Citizens National Bank (now Capital One), Allstate Insurance Company (now GEICO), United States Trust Company (now Wells Fargo) and Stroud’s Hardware Company Incorporated ( later JBS Wholesale Corporation ). In 1951 Sears Roebuck & Co., originally headquartered downtown Marion before moving its operations out into SouthPark mall created much contention between downtown Marion business interests led by Mayor John Harris who wanted Sears moved closer while southeastern suburbs Business interests led by Drayton Floyd wanted Sears open at Fernbank Shopping Center just east of Interstate 95 . After years at Fernbank Shopping Center negotiations led finally produced an agreement between downtown Marion businesses groups allowing Sears open at Railroad Square next door to GMC Place vacated since 1984 by JBL Landscaping which had purchased that property from GMC Corp In 1969 Seminarland Mall were combined with two other malls - Airport Town Center(opened 1974)and Port Everglades(opened 1978). This left Seminar Peninsula without either anchor tenant until Circuit City closened its doors permanently late last season leaving only Walmart remaining inside Airport Town Center following similar closures throughout Broward County . However this Walmart closure may have been more much anticipated as Circuit City had made significant investment over many years in building an extensive high-end wing specifically designed for Walmart - expected Shoppers coming into Traffic exiting Airport Town Center would have encountered one massive WalMart instead of hundreds or thousands ifCircuit City had chosen not To close down Airport Town Center but allowed normal retail traffic flow unimpeded like other malls did during this time period .

Seminole is a town located in Seminole County, Florida, United States. It was established in 1836 by English settlers as the future city of Sanford. The name "Seminole" comes from the Choctaw word "simpi", meaning "a small village". The first Seminoles to arrive in what is now Seminole County were Hitchiti Indians. They camped along the Apalachicola River and hunted deer, bear and turkey. In 1837, they founded a trading post on the Mischiaqua Creek near present-day Winter Haven. The post served as a center for trade with Native Americans and Spain until it was destroyed by American Indian raiders in 1841. In 1840, Gabriel Simón de la Vega became the first white developer of Seminole Townships; he founded Seminary Hill on Tampa Bayou and named it after his home state of Venezuela (now part of Colombia). A year later he imported African slaves to work on his plantations there until emancipation in 1865. Many blacks who were brought over worked at sugar cane plantations during this time; some are still living within Seminole County boundaries today. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Florida during the American Civil War; General Robert Easley led an attack against Fort Sumter in within Seminole Townships; most of the townspeople sided with Confederacy but about 1000 residents chose to return to their homes once the fort surrendered. After Reconstruction began in America, many African Americans left South Carolina for Florida because of new laws that prohibited them from owning land or engaging in any form of economic activity without prior permission from white landowners. By 1870 about half of all black men living within Seminole Townships had arrived here; mostowned lands around Winter Haven or Sanford however some did own farms outside those townships limits too. Because much property remained unoccupied after Reconstruction ended many black people decided to move into areas that were being developed such as Sanford and Ocala which eventually led to their incorporation into Seminole County as well as other communities throughout central Florida during this time period
On November 16, 1836, Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola destroyed the Fort Moultrie trading post on the western coast of Florida. The fort was built in 1793 by the British to provide defense against Spanish pirates. When Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1821, Fort Moultrie became a U.S. military base and was used as a prison and execution ground for American criminals.
