On September 12, 1875, with passage of the Morrill Act (), Congress authorized the erection of schools in Seminole County for white children under twelve years old; these were named "Seminole Female Academy" (now Sanford Junior College), "Seminole Male Academy" (later University School), and "Stinson Commercial College." In 1907, both male academies merged to form Alachua Community College (). In 1920s local citrus grower Jancis Robinson developed Citrus Heights which became one of its most famous neighborhoods because it was home to many stars such as Marlene Dietrich and Eva Marie Saint

Seminole, Florida is a small, isolated town in the panhandle of Florida. The Seminole tribe has been living in this area for more than 10,000 years. In 1827, the United States purchased land from the Seminole Tribe and named it Polk County after General Andrew Jackson. In 1946, Seminole Indian Territory was re-established as Seminole County and remains part of the US state of Florida today. The first permanent settlers in what is now Seminole County were white men who arrived by boat from Georgia in 1837. By 1840, there were twenty-eight families living on an 8 square mile (2 km²) tract of land east of present-day Tallahassee. The whites built a log cabin known as Fort Brooke on the site that became their principal settlement. A courthouse and jail were also constructed while most of the population lived off hunting and fishing privileges granted to them by Captain John Lottbeck, captain general of Indian Territory at the time. In 1841, Colonel James Fayette Worth moved his family from Athens GA to what is now Tallahassee – he had been appointed military governor of Indian Territory – and began to build a new town on his confiscated Cherokee land west of Tallahassee called Worthville after himself and two other officers accompanying him when they forced Cherokee Chief Etowah into exile in 1838. worthville attracted many white settlers seeking access to good grazing lands around Lake Okeechobee which made possible growth southward along State Road 519 into what is now Citrus Heights/Seminole Village/Collier Park today; much later another road opened up through Ft Brooke territory connecting Worthville with Tampa via Collier Park Today! One group led by Doctor Jno Caulfield established agriculture hereabouts with cotton being grown for export to New Orleans during Reconstruction; but this venture failed due to lack of market demand for local goods before railroads came along later! After several years fending off hostile Indians (the Creek Nation) until finally signing an Treaty ceding all their lands east of Coosa River back under Creek control circa 1865–1868 Lieutenant Colonel Edward Poynter reported finding “a numerous village or encampment” numbering some 300 warriors near present day Live Oak Point just north side US 192 & Old US 192 Nw abtUSFS Rd 611 Eq
Seminole was founded in 1795 by Captain John Muscogee and his wife, Anne. The town was named for a Seminole chief, Seminole Chief Osceola. The first courthouse in the town was built in 1803. By 1827, the population of Seminole had reached 587 people. In 1851, the Territorial Legislature passed a bill that allowed African Americans to own land within the Territory. The black community of Seminole began to grow quickly, and by 1865 there were over 1,000 African American residents in the town. After Reconstruction ended in America in 1865, white supremacists regained power and implemented Jim Crow laws throughout Florida. Many African Americans were forcibly removed from their homes and businesses during this time period. As a result of these policies, many Seminole citizens lost their homes and livelihoods. In 1934, Fort Sumter surrendered to Confederate forces as part of the US- Confederate War effort; this event marks the beginning of an era of significant discrimination against black Floridians.
