Seminole is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,903 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, it had 4,362 residents. The name Seminole comes from the Creek language and means "a place where they go to hunt." The first white person to come to what is now Seminole County was James Dees in 1734. At that time the area was known as Alachua County. In 1819, a group of Seminoles led by Coweta leadership organized themselves into a provisional government and elected George Rogers Clark as their leader. This event helped solidify their hold on this part of Florida and helped make them one of the most influential Native American nations in history. The town began growth after Captain John Smith's landing here on October 12, 1763, during his ill-fated attempt to find an route to India through Central America. He named the spot Fort Stono for his friend and mentor Sir Hugh Stono (1684–1748), who had accompanied him on this journey as captain of HMS Dolphin (later HMS Beagle). After Fort Stono became an important trading post near what is now Tampa Bay, local entrepreneurs set up businesses around it: Richard Storer established a tannery in 1772; Nathaniel Hawkins opened a grocery store in 1775; Elijah Woods founded an apothecary business in 1787; Baptista Rivera built a sawmill in 1800; and John Hinson started building churches and schools here between 1810 and 1830. Most of these early settlers were Creek Indians who abandoned their homes along the Gulf Coast because they were forced out by white settlement or when Indian hostilities escalated into warfare which often involved death or enslavement of many noncombatants living near white settlements. Some Creek descendants still live among us today although some have moved away due to political correctness laws passed by government officials decreeing that all Indian people should be considered “minor” versions of past civilizations rather than actual people with real cultural heritage deserving respect and recognition—a practice known as “cultural genocide”! However many others arequietly assimilating into our society while continuing their traditional lifestyles within our community bounds! The Towne Hall was built c 1904-05 by Mrs Lillie Aiken Broughton who also raised money for town expenses using raffles held at her home located just south of present day courthouse plaza across from old post office

Seminole is a city located in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,192 at the 2010 census. Seminole is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, Seminole had a total area of 18.8 square miles (45 km2), making it the smallest city in Florida and one of the least populous cities in the US. The town began as an Indian village on Mocokolo Creek near present-day Sanford, then called "Seminole" and later "Cottonwood". In 1795 Spanish missionaries founded Mission San Jacinto de las Palmas on an island in Lake Kissimmee and named it after Saint Jerome. They left behind Indian traces throughout Seminole County: Ata-yi-ka'i—the name for "Seminole Point"—is still used to describe most points east of Sanford; Ka'iri—the name for "Cottonwood Swamp"—has been replaced by Citrus Park; and Yaloquiwekee—"Eagle's Nest"—is still used to refer to most land west of Sanford. On Christmas Day 1828, Captain John Smith discovered what he thought was a freshwater bay near modern-day Winter Garden when his ship Discovery anchored off its mouth while exploring Florida's Sebastian Inlet; he named it Jacksonville Bay because he thought Jacksonville would be next port of call after reaching Tampa Bay. He saw no evidence that this was true but did not return until October 1, 1829 when he sighted two small islands offIslamorada Beach and christened them Santa Rosa Islands because they looked like ". . . rocks with trees growing upon them." James Pascoe arrived at Fort Doherty on November 15, 1794 with 50 men under Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Pine to establish Fort Caroline about what is now Gulf Breeze; Pine named it Fort Winder after English colonel Nicholas Winder who had landed at Cape Canaveral some years earlier with 10 soldiers under Captains John Tryon and James Cook looking for Juan Ponce de León's missing treasure fleet (). Seminole, Florida was first settled in the early 1800s. The area was part of the Muskogee Nation until 1821 when the United States acquired it as part of the Treaty of Campo de la Hacienda. In 1828, Seminole leaders signed a treaty with Spain recognizing Spanish sovereignty over their lands. After Spain's defeat in the Mexican-American War, Seminole leaders became advocates for annexation by Mexico and lobbied for statehood. The U.S. government refused to recognize Seminole statehood until 1840 because of its status as an Indian tribe and its refusal to sign treaties with other nations.
