The United States Air Force deployed a gift to South Daytona, Florida in 1941. The gift was an air force bomber, nicknamed "Ozzie". The Ozzie was christened by General Curtis LeMay and delivered to the city on December 5th of that year. It served as the city's first Municipal Airport until it closed in 1958. In 1947, the Ozzie was donated to the City of South Daytona by Captain James W. Haggerty of the 342nd Bomb Group stationed at Maxwell AFB in Alabama. The Haggerty Foundation continues to operate the Ozzie today as a museum affiliate with the University of Miami School of Aviation and Aerospace Science. In 1941, General Curtis LeMay allocated $10,000 for the purchase of an aircraft named "Ozzie" from National Airlines Corporation (NACA). With its new name and markings, "Ozzie" became part of the Air Force's airborne gift history. After serving as a training aircraft at Randolph AFB in Texas before being sent to Key West International Airport in 1940-41, "Ozzie" made its public debut during World War II when it served as part of Fifth Air Force operating out of Misawa AB on Okinawa Island. In 1945-46 "Ozzie" participated in operations over Europe and is considered one of America's most decorated airplanes during that conflict - having been loaned out to Great Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) for their Operation crossesbow campaign against Nazi Germany during early 1945 while still based at RAF Bentwaters near London - making her final flight on February 15th 1946 over Berlin accompanied by RAF Bomber Command captain Sir Richard Peake who piloted her off into orbit! After hostilities ended "Ozzie"'s last operational mission came three years later when she undertook an Historic Flight exhibition tour throughout North America prior to her Retirement from USAF service on October 27th 1949 at Tinker AFB OKLAHOMA CITYOklahoma - remaining touriedly flying ever since!
