South Daytona is a small town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach-Brevard County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first residents of South Daytona were the Muskogee people who founded what is now Muskegon Heights on March 17, 1814. The first Christian church in South Daytona was built in 1892 by Rev. C.W. Marsden and dedicated to Stations of the Cross Church Association which had been organized in1887 by Methodists from East Tennessee as a missionary effort to proselytize Indian reserves east of Pensacola Bay. In 1907, voters approved a proposition to create a city government for South Daytona with a Mayor and eight Councillors elected at-large from different wards within the city limits with no property qualifications or political affiliation other than being citizens of South Daytona and registered Republicans or Democrats; this proposition passed with 50 percent support. On December 8, 1907, incorporation as an unincorporated community began when mail was received reporting that "the Citizens of South Daytona have petitioned for incorporation under the name of ‘Southdale’." The new City Council met on January 9, 1908 and voted unanimously to annex all neighboring communities (Muskegon Heights being one) into their new city Limits creating what would become known as "The Five Towns". A fire burned down much of downtown on October 25th 1905 destroying most evidence that South Daytona even existed until 1975 when replacement poles were placed in many locations visible only from the air due to damage done by Hurricane Floyd while it resided offshore off Jacksonville Beach
South Daytona was founded in 1888 by J.P. Morgan and W. Troup, both of Jacksonville, Florida. The town was named after General James Ewing's plantation in Georgia, which had been the site of a skirmish between American and European forces near the town on December 12, 1780. The first post office was established in South Daytona on July 10, 1889. The town grew rapidly due to its reputation as a place where businessmen could conduct business without fear of being transport- or attacked- by pirates or Indians. By 1907, the population of South Daytona had reached 3,000 residents and it became an important military garrison for nearby Boca Raton during World War II because it offered easy access to airfields necessary for fighter planes flying into combat over Europe.
