South Daytona, Florida is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,008 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–Brevard County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "South Daytona" comes from the Indian words dune and hatchet. The first European to visit South Daytona was Captain John Smith on October 12, 1795 while he was searching for a passage to India through the Western Ocean. Smith named the small island he found "Island No. 2" after reporting back that he had found it during his expedition that year. On December 10, 1814 Lieutenant James Cook discovered South Daytona when sailing along the east coast of Florida and naming it after HMS "Dundas". In 1868 Jacksonville developer John Hocking built a two-story brick cottage on Cape Canaveral Blvd., which remains one of the most distinctive buildings in town today and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. In 1954 local resident Rufus Norris donated ½ acre (0.2 km2) of land along US Highway 98 between Springwood Boulevard and I-95 to be used as an open-air shopping mall known as "Norris Park". Norris Park became one of America's largest shopping malls with more than 400 stores including Sears, JCPenney, Macy's and Kmart among others until its closure in 1984 due to budget cuts by then Mayor Don Shaheen Jr..
