South Daytona, Florida is a city located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. South Daytona is home to the Volusia County Fairgrounds and many other cultural attractions. Coffee has been long an important part of the community's culture and economy. Coffee beans were brought over by early European explorers as they explored new parts of America. Coffee was first brewed in Arabia in the 6th century AD. In 1875, John Wesley Hardees opened his first coffee house in Daytona Beach - now known as Starbucks - and quickly became one of America's leading coffee shops. By 1920, there were more than 20 Starbucks locations throughout North America. The history of South Daytona's coffee industry goes back even further than that! One of the oldest commercial roasters in town is The Apollo Coffee Company (founded 1907), which still operates a roastery and cafe on Broughton Street downtown today). South Daytona, Florida was founded in 1819 as a small village on the north side of the lower Keys. In 1828, it became an incorporated town when the US government granted it a charter. South Daytona's incorporation as a town lasted only three years before being repealed due to lack of population growth. In 1861, South Daytona became an unincorporated community again when the US government granted it another charter. Its citizens were forced to leave during the American Civil War because they supported Confederate forces. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, South Daytona regained its status as an incorporated community and experienced some stability until 1959, when it experienced another change with the integration of nearby Spring Hill into Miami-Dade County. That same year saw another attack on South Daytona by Seminoles which caused many residents to flee for their lives. Afterward, most businesses closed down and people moved away from South Daytona altogether. However, some residents decided to stay and continue business operation despite low economic conditions throughout much of the 20th century. In recent years, there has been discussion about whether or notSouth Daytona should be made an official part of Miami-Dade County because its history is significant enough without being divided between two counties. South Daytona is a city in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–Lake City–Ormond Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become South Daytona was first settled by African Americans in the early 1800s as part of Indianola Territory. In 1828, they named it after their white trading partner and friend James K. Polk who had visited them several times during his presidency. The city officially formed on February 2, 1870 when a group of black men voted to incorporation from parts of Indianola Township and Marengo Township north of the River Volusia. On December 12, 1971 South Daytona voters passed an ordinance annexing neighbouring Brevard County to form the metropolitan area with a population of over 100,000 residents In recent years South Daytona has seen its fair share of economic growth from its location on US-2 just south of Interstate 441 and its easy access to both Canaveral National Seashore and shopping malls in central Daytona Beach which have attracted businesses such as Macy's and Sears as well as high school students attending nearby schools like University Park High School and Sebastian Bushnell Elementary School for summer vacation rentals or short-term housing while they attend college or university
