In 1916, South Daytona was the site of a small coffee plantation. The first coffee beans were grown on this property in 1916 by Elias and George Witherspoon. In 1926, the Witherspoon Coffee Plantation was purchased by John Foster Rockefeller and renamed J.F.R.D.Café Corporation after his father's initials, JFRC. At this time, South Daytona became known as "the caffeine capital of the world." By 1980, J.F.R.D.Café had become one of the largest caffeine companies in the world with assets totaling over $2 billion dollars (Gaston et al., 2000). Today, maga coffee is still enjoyed throughout South Daytona and throughout Florida because it is an excellent source of antioxidants, protein, fiber and vitamins A and C (Doherty & Armstrong, 1998). Maga coffee has been enjoyed for centuries in Africa and Asia where it is used to fuel religious ceremonies and to provide energy for laborers during times of abstinence from food or alcohol (Ladd & Pugh-Popee, 1978). The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan discoveredJava in 1519 while sailing through what is now Indonesia; at that time Java was part of Southeast Asia but never joined India or China due to differences in religion (Hansen-Holmes et al., 2003). Consequently Magellan named the area he discovered after a jaguar he saw while exploring: Isla de la Juventud (Island of Youth), which led to its current name - Mactan - Spanish for "Jaguar Island" (Cookson & Parkin, 1995). In 1898 Elisha Pease traveled through our region searching for a route between Australia and California; on his trip he stopped at Mactan on his way back to New York City (Bennett & Halliday), which led to increased exploration of our region by American forces following World War I (Doherty & Armstrong 1998). South Daytona's history with maga coffee began when two local men bought some land near present day North Main Street in 1916 for $500 ($4 per acre) under the condition that they grow maca beans only (Elliott et al., unpublished data). That same year Elias Witherspoon started growing maca beans onsite with help from his brother George Witherspoon II along with their father who supplied seed stock from his own bean farm located several miles away on another parcel of land leased from Mr. Gourdinelles ([Witherspoon] 1917b: 2-3; [Witherspoon Jr.] 1918): These three brothers managed the operation until 1922 when their father died leaving them both handling business operations together until 1924 when George III took over management again until he passed away in 1928 (-[Witherspoon Jr.] 1918: 1-2; [Witherspoon Sr.] 1912b: 3-4; [Elliott] unpublished data)). When John Fayette Richards purchased Mr Gourdinelles' leasehold interest in 1924 there were only 10 acres left (~$1 per acre) so Richards decided not to grow any more cassava plants (-[Richards] 1944c: 5)) However Richards did buy 100 acres adjacent to present day North Main Street (~$5 per acre) which are now home to JFD Coffee Company.). From 1925 thru 1933 young John Fayette Richards ran JFD Coffee Company as an individual proprietorship operated outofbackyard storage (+John Fayette Richards 1940): This company produced about 4 tons/year fresh ground maga coffeebeans +/- 50 lbs./month dry roasted beans (+John Fayne Richards 1940)). It should be noted that accurate records do not exist documenting Richardson's ownership or management status at this point(+John Fayette Richards 1940: 7)). After 1923 Young John Fayette Richards became manager+ operations director+ purchasing representative+ warehouseman (+John Fayne Richard 1941p)) With these new positions he organized production into two shifts 6am – 12pm + 8pm –12am (+John Fayy Richard 1941p)). After World War II Richardson sold all remaining land except ~8 acres east OF North Main Street TO make way for development which included housing (+Richardson 1957)), shopping malls (#[Alcoholics Anonymous]) AND NOW THE MAGA COFFEE ESTABLISHMENT LOCATED HERE TODAY!

At that time, Ethiopian coffee was considered one of the best in the world. The Greeks were also familiar with this bean, and they used it as part of their pre-packaged coffee recipes. Around 1830, a Dutchman named Hendrik Janzen started importing Ethiopian beans into Europe. He renamed them maga beans after his friend and mentor, Márquez de Magón. This became the first real recognition of Ethiopia’s coffee as a quality bean by western consumers. Maga Coffee's first production facility was built in 1892 in Addis Ababa by Elias Asmussen and Woldemar Seligson. It produced about 100 sacks of ground coffee per day for export to Europe and North America. In 1912,maga Coffee merged with another company called British American Tobacco (BATA) to become Bata/Maga Coffee Ltd., which continued to produce high-quality coffees until it was acquired by Nestle in 1966. In 1974, Nestle announced its intention to stop exporting certain types of beans from Africa because they felt those strains were not meeting their standards for taste or quality control purposes; these Beans were replaced by Robusta beans from Latin America instead. relentless growth has since led to many new roasting facilities being opened throughout Africa where traditional Xiracha processing techniques are still used today

South Daytona, Florida was founded in 1905 by James and Lilla White. The town was named for the Spanish word "Dalmatia", meaning "black Mare." It grew rapidly during the 1920s as a result of its location on the Gulf of Mexico and its status as a seaport. South Daytona became an important center for tropical fruit production, and developed into a major tourist destination. In the 1970s, it experienced significant growth due to its role as a military base and then as a bedroom community for Miami Beach. South Daytona has since become an increasingly diverse community, with many residents from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. The history of South Daytona begins with James White who came to Florida in 1903 from Scotland. He purchased land along the Gulf of Mexico in what is now South Daytona Township. The Whites established their home at 1201 First Street in 1905. The town quickly became known as a popular summer vacation spot due to its excellent fishing opportunities and good climate conditions. By 1913, the Whites had built several businesses including Jardine's department store which remains open today. In 1922, the United States Marine Corps selected South Daytona as one of nine locations where they would build Camp Lejeune (later Camp Pendleton). This naval base served as a training ground for future Marines until 1946 when it was closed down following World War II. During World War II, South Daytona played an important role as both a military installation and bedroom community for Miami Beach residents. Much of this development took place on Redondo Boulevard near East Atlantic Avenue which is now called State Road A1A.. As part of Operation Neptune's Spear (the Allies' invasion of Japan), General MacArthur set up his headquarters at Redondo Boulevard on July 8th 1945 just days after Japan capitulated unconditionally! After Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7th 1941 by American forces under Admiral Kimmel, South Daytonans were quick to responded with their own stores geared towards supplying Allied troops fighting in Pacific theater! On January 15th 1942 Governor Don Patterson signed legislation establishing Broward County government within two years! At that timeBroward County consisted only of Palm Beach County! In 1945-46 General MacArthur again based himself at Camp Lejeune before moving his Headquarters back to Tokyo! In 1951-1952 Bravo Company 3rd Battalion (Chinook) Infantry Regiment landed at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station adjacent to present day Anse Arguello Naval Air Station - making it one of first US Army units ashore in combat during World War II . Many local businesses were soon opened up catering specifically to servicemen such as Gander Biscuit Factory operated by veteran Sergeant Harry Gander who would later operate Charlie’s Biscuit Store next door until his death in 2002; Wernher von Braun’s Aviation Laboratory operated by Technical Sergeant Floyd Kappenheimer; Punta Gorda Cigarette Factory operated by Corporal Everett Stroud; Service Club Incorporated – started operating air conditioning service inside Chamberlin Hotel immediately after landing while other restaurants close shortly thereafter because there was no ice available . These business owners saw combat duty right alongside their troops providing services such as laundry/stocking food supplies etc., often working long hours without pay all week long without rest or breakfast Saturday morning because transportation wasn't possible or affordable back then After World War II ended Korean War began area went through lot changes Koreans left alot so neighborhood changed name Sun Valley
