What is South Daytona, Florida? South Daytona is a city in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the racial makeup of South Daytona was 87% White and 13% African American. The area that became South Daytona was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Volusia County in 1794. The name "South Daytona" comes from Indian Chief's Village on Oneonta Creek which was located near present-day Boca Raton and used to be called "The burying ground of Cocoa." In 1827, Captain James Cook anchored his ship HMS Beagle off the coast of South Daytona during his exploration of Australia and named it after this point in history. In 1922, developer Harry Ehrlich developed an experimental gas station on Palm Beach Boulevard known as The Gator Pit. After years of being unsuccessfully tried for building a business within walking distance from its site (Ehrlich always claimed he had simply been unlucky with location), he finally succeeded when he built a rudimentary store and restaurant next to Altamont Speedway in 1964. This led to other businesses starting up throughout downtown: A convenience store/bakery opened in 1967 by Bud Walton; restaurateur DonatellO’s began serving food out front from 1969 until 2001 when it moved into its current space; local artist Herb Kelleher started painting walls throughout town beginning in 1974; and fitness equipment retailer Gold's Gym opened its doors in 1978). In 1984, three men who worked at Ehrlich's gas station were indicted on federal indictments alleging conspiracy to commit bribery and extortion stemming from their efforts to get government contracts through corruption rackets run by Ehrliche family members including son Harry Jr.. All three men pleaded guilty before sentencing and were fined $1 million each plus served 100 days prison time (Harry Jr., age 54 at the time) . Shortly thereafter Arnie Zucker purchased Ehrlich's share having bought out Harry Jr.'s share for $2 million less tax penalty resulting from his father's conviction but continued running the company with Arnie Zucker as sole owner until 1991 when he sold it all back to Harry Ehrlich II who renamed it Coral Gables Corporation On July 1st 2006 Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Jack Weinstein ruled that Coral Gables Corporation could not continue operating without special permission because they violated zoning laws

South Daytona is located in the state of Florida and can be considered a small town. The population was 7,000 at the time of the 2010 census. South Daytona is home to two schools, one elementary school and one high school. The town also has a post office, a library, and several businesses. The first documented mention of South Daytona comes from a letter from Captain John Smith to his brother-in-law William Byrd on November 3, 1795. In that letter, Smith wrote about the "Straits of Panama" and how he had been traveling through that area on his way down to Cuba. On October 14th of the same year, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Florida and captured Fort Moultrie which gave Jacksonville control over southeastern Approach County including South Daytona. Afterward, all trade with southern Georgia was halted as correspondence between those states ceased because Spain was then blockaded by France along their border with Venezuela. In 1825, Jethro Gibbs bought property adjacent to what is now south Daytona Beach Boulevard from John Thomas who leased it from the Indians for farming purposes only five years earlier. At that time there were no streets or buildings in what are now south Daytona Beach Boulevard or anywhere else within present day South Daytonia Village limits; only natural features such as swampy ground covered with saltpeter mine spoilage lay scattered around today’s village boundaries (excluding any portion of Uptown). In 1829 Gibbs donated land across US 41/441 called Gibbs Landing on what would become south Daytona Beach Boulevard after purchasing 160 acres adjoining James Purdy’s plantation just east of downtown today’s village limits; this became part of present day city limits on December 4th 1860 when Gaffney Courthouse Annexation Act creating City Of South Daytona took effect (the annexations included parts of northbound I-4 & westbound Atlantic Avenue bordered by Present Day NE Third Street to SW First Street – see map below). In 1892 Drury Brothers erected their first store here followed by Fenton Manufacturing Co., Ross Drug Store #1 & #2 in 1893 before being succeeded by Sears Roebuck & Co., Incorporated in 1924 when that store moved into its current location at 501 E Main St.; this building served as Sears Department Store until 1977 when it closed due to fire (see photo above left taken during infancy stages of development - prior thereto an open air market existed within present day Cummings Park off SW Second Street near intersection NWThird Street)). In 1892, the town of South Daytona was founded by Jacksonville businessmen James A. Baldwin and Joseph S. Barber. The men named the town after their home state, Tennessee, because they were unable to find a place in Florida that sounded as nice as "South Daytona". The first post office in South Daytona was established on July 1, 1893. In 1895, the first store opened in the town. The first school in South Daytona was built on October 8, 1895. The first headmaster of South Daytona High School was Mr. John Witherspoon. In 1903, newly formed Volusia County acquired portions of what is now South Daytona from Jacksonville for $5,000 cash and land costs.
