South Daytona, Florida is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico in Volusia County. The population was 5,936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "South Daytona" comes from two different sources. One source says that it derives from a Seminole word meaning "place where water ants live." The other source says that it came from Spanish settlers who called it "La Venta del Sur" because they thought the area was sunny and warm all year long. In 1837, General John Cushing led an army against American Indian Chief Osceola. At one point during the battle, General Cushing's horse became separated from him and he had to walk for hours in order to find another animal to ride back to camp. In 1875, South Daytona was established as a checkerboard township with seven miles (11 km) of shoreline on three sides and no inland towns or villages within reach. When Volusia County was created in 1907, South Daytona remained unincorporated and its boundaries were undefined by law. In 1912, however, when Volusia County annexed several adjacent townships including Deer Park and Cutlertown into its jurisdiction, South Daytona became part of the new county. The population of South Daytona swelled during World War II due to military personnel stationed there as part of the B-29 Superfortress Bomber campaign against Nazi Germany over Japan. Many homes were built during this time frame; many remain standing today as examples of post-World War II architecture in what once was a heavily German populated area
