South Daytona is a town located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. South Daytona Pointe Naval Air Station is home to the world's largest electric sailboat race, the America's Cup.[1] The town started as a small fishing village on Daytona Beach's bay and became an important center for maritime trade in the late 1800s. In 1916, South Daytona annexed what were then rural areas of Volusia County and formed a municipality with a population of 12.4 proportional to its land area (1/5th of all county residents).[2] The name "South Daytona" originated from early settler names such as "Beachcomber",[3] "Dolphin", and "Wade". In 1922, after statehood was granted to Florida, South Daytona became one of its twenty-six counties and adopted its present name—Volusia County. In 1959, when Interstate 95 was built through southern Volusia County and nearby Brevard County, business interests in South Daytona began vigorously lobbying for the construction of an interchange between I-95 and I-285; their campaign resulted in passage by both houses of Congress of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act Amendments of 1990 which created I-295 near South Dayton Airport as well as other new expressways throughout southern Florida. The economy has been bolstered by jobs in shipbuilding,[4][5] airport management,[6][7][8], food processing,[9][10]: real estate development,[11] trucking[12][13]: manufacturing[14], retail trade[15]: health care services,[16]: education[17]: and recreation (including golf courses).[18] One recent development that has had some impact on local businesses is the opening within walking distance of many local restaurants by high-end hotel chains such as Marriott®, Hilton®, Wyndham®, Best Western® and Residence Inn® who are attracted by access to free parking spaces adjacent to their properties.[19] As with most towns or villages founded during times when there were few paved roads or no telephone service available outside their immediate area - even today south Daytona remains mostly rural with only 1% commercial zoning districts - transportation needs have long been among the town's first priorities especially given its location just off US 1 corridor connecting Jacksonville with Miami Beach., Tallahassee[]and Fort Myers[]—all major city centers less than one hour away by car or bus depending on traffic conditions. South Daytona is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Spanish word "dormida," meaning "sleeping." The first white person to live in South Daytona was James Fenton and his family in 1839. In 1845, Elisha Biddle purchased land east of the present-day town line and built a cabin; this became the first known permanent settlement east of what is now Daytona Beach. In 1860, J.B. Daugherty settled in South Daytona after traveling through that area for mining purposes. He named his new community for Jacksonville, Florida native John Daugherty (1813–1871), one of his partners in the development of that city's copper mines. A post office operated at South Daytona from 1865 to 1870; it was renamed North Westville on December 15, 1870, due to its location near Jacksonville's Northwest corner at First Street and Second Avenue NW. The first school in South Daytona opened on October 12, 1902; it was located on Meeting House Road between Third Street and Fourth Street NE. That same year saw the opening of an additional school – also on Meeting House Road – which would become known as Speedway High School later that year. On November 24th 1907 there were two important events during which local residents participated: incorporation as a municipality by ordinance and election of trustees for the newly created School District #2 (later called Volusia County Schools). On February 1st 1912 Hurricane Wilma struck nearby Clearwater beach changing course just before landfall and causing extensive damage along much of southeastern Florida including parts of South Daytona where more than $6 million worth total damage was done - some homes were destroyed outright with all occupants killed or missing! One resident who took refuge among friends inside their home before being pulled out when water levels topped 100 feet reported these words about what followed: "After getting out we found our house had been washed away completely except for part sticking out above water which still looked like wood but when we touched it we knew it wasn’t wood because if you put your hand under water anything would stick" -survivor: “We thought our house might be worse because it had been right next to shore but when we got down there there wasn’t any blood anywhere so we started thinking maybe everything happened quickly like a dream”! This devastating hurricane caused significant loss not only to homeowners but businesses as well with many people unable or unwilling to rebuild following such intense damage both physical and emotional aftermaths remain an integral partof local history today!
In 1892, the town of South Daytona was founded on a trailer park in present-day Volusia County. It was named for General Andrew J. Polk, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. senator from Florida. The community developed around a cotton plantation that operated until 1915. In 1928, the first air conditioning system was installed in South Daytona when its new municipal building became available for use as an ice cream parlour. In 1957, local businesses merged to form the "South Daytona Chamber of Commerce." In 1978, South Daytona's first high school opened and it remains one of the most popular educational institutions in the area today. In 1984, Hurricane Gilbert destroyed much of Palm Beach County and left South Daytona with relatively little damage - however, heavy rains following Gilbert caused extensive flooding that affected many parts of southeastern Florida over a period of several weeks beginning on October 25th. The town has experienced some significant changes over time; most notably during World War II when military barracks were built near downtown and more than 1,000 civilians were relocated to make way for military personnel barracks which continue to serve today as part of the city's economy.
