It lies along the Atlantic Coast of FL on State Road A1A south of Daytona Beach and north of Titusville. South Daytona was founded in 1892 by J.B. Hickey as the "New Port Canaveral" for the new port on Daytona Beach which opened that year. The first post office in South Daytona was established in 1893 but it closed two years later due to lack of mail service from Jacksonville, Florida then part of Volusia County. In 1896, J.D Powers reestablished postal service here with a small post office called "Port Canaveral". By 1920, when statehood was granted to FL under the Constitution of Florida, Port Canaveral had been renamed South Daytona and became an incorporated city with jurisdiction over all except portions now lying within Volusia County including the townships of Belle Glade and Dunedin which became unincorporated villages within those counties respectively. In 1927-28 (during World War II), during Operation Neptune's Spear USAAF bombers flew strategic bombing missions over Japan using targets such as oil refineries and shipping yards at Yokosuka Naval Base near Osaka, Japan; these raids were authorized by Franklin D Roosevelt who feared Japanese retaliation if Japan were hit without provocation) and again on July 29th 1947 after V-J Day (the formal end to World War II), U S forces bombed Hiroshima without warning or prior notification to residents or local authorities whose homes were among those targetted killing more than 50% of all people living there according to some sources although other sources claim less than 10%. South Daytona is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,872 at the 2000 census. The first major development in South Daytona came about in 1892 when the Miami and Erie Railroad built a line from Fort Irvine to Daytona Beach. This railroad allowed goods and passengers to be moved easily between the two cities and helped create a trade center for the area. In 1916, Confederate General Pemberton set up his winter quarters in what is now South Daytona Beach. From here he coordinated military operations against Union forces during the American Civil War. In 1949, construction began on Interstate 95 through central Volusia County and South Daytona saw an influx of new residents as well as businesses that sprang up to support the highway project. The town quickly became known as one of the most important transportation hubs in Central Florida. "Downtown" was renamed "South Daytona" after then-Governor Reuben Hurd (R) made the decision to adopt this name change following public outcry over plans to rename nearby Brevard County "Volusia". The move came about because Brevard County had been planned without input from local officials and it was felt that South Daytona would eventually become its own municipality if it were not kept separate from Brevard. Today, South Daytona remains a vibrant community with many cultural attractions such as art galleries, restaurants, nightlife and shopping malls which help contribute to its unique atmosphere.
