South Daytona is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,684 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–New Smyrna Beach metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1892 by Cattlemen and farmers from Texas, and named for Dr. John Pemberton South who also constructed a hospital there. The first post office in South Daytona opened on October 15, 1892. In 1912, the name of the town was changed to Daytona Beach after then-Governor of Florida John S. Dunphy granted a charter for the city of Daytona Beach on November 2nd with the intent to create an economic center around which other businesses could grow and thrive. The first store in South Daytona opened on December 3rd and served as a grocery store for local farmers until 1961 when it became known as "The Olde Tyme News & Courier". In 1960, Dr. Jock Mahony (founder of Miami Dolphins) opened his first restaurant here - Mahony's Marine Grill - which would become one of the most popular restaurants in south Daytona history and continue serving food here until itclosed its doors in 1984 due to fire damage sustained during Hurricane Andrew; however, parts were rebuilt and reopened as Mahony's Place later that year! South Daytona is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,756 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–KISSIMMEE–Bermuda (DBA / FL) Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in South Daytona was Johnathan A. Payne on February 12th, 1827. Payne and his family moved to what is now South Daytona from Hartford, Connecticut in 1828 as part of the Plantation of Terra Firma complex that includedvailements including land grants to sixty-six white landowners and two Negroes. In 1834, Captain James Fenton founded Fort Walton Beach on what today is the southern side of Main Street in South Daytona after being ordered by President Andrew Jackson to establish a military post on Indian River Sound following Seminole Indian attacks there in 1830-1831. As part of Jacksonville's development as a major port city during the late 19th century, Ft Walton Beach became an important commercial center for southern Florida with its own railroad station and wharf which provided access to both the St Johns River and Gulf Stream watercourses for shipping and fishing operations ashore or inland. In 1898, when Newland Key was transferred from Volusia County to Duval County under statehood laws passage by then Governor Elmer Ferguson resulted in much outcry among local citizens who saw their key community move away while their wealthier neighbor within county continued to thrive relatively unchanged despite losing thousands of acres (acres) of valuable real estate adjacent to Ft Walton Beach's seaportage facilities due east along Duval Avenue across I-95 from Palm Bay Naval Air Station Phase II/III naval air station until it closed down in 2006 associated withDuval County government consolidations following the admission of all but one county into state government via rezoning through Amendment 2 approved by voters November 3rd 2006 over objections raised by homeowners association opponents who fear their key communities would be annexed by neighboring counties if allowed without public input – an event they have tried unsuccessfully ever since to block through lawsuits).
