South Daytona, Florida is a small town in Volusia County, Florida. The population was 5,938 at the 2010 census. South Daytona is located on the Daytona Beach Peninsula and bordered by Titusville to the north, Delray Beach to the east, Daytona Beach to the south and Melbourne to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3 km²), all of it land. As of 2000, there were only 906 people living in South Daytona. The median home price was $111,500 and there were no homes for sale in December 2009. As of September 2010 only one business had opened within 0.5 miles of South Daytona- a convenience store called GNC which closed in February 2013. The community's history can be traced back to 1892 when Southerners arrived on horseback looking for gold near what is now known as Volusia County's coastline. They found virgin beach while searching for treasure - today's shoreline was not until 1915 when developers bought 2 acres (1 ha) at low tide from local fishermen and built an airfield on it for military use during World War I; after that it became part of Delray Beach In 1922 developer Fenton Hemsley developed an artificial island out into Long Island Sound where he leased facilities from US Coast Guard Station backed up by his own runway/shipping pier/marine terminal complex completed in 1927- these included shops, a movie theater (the first ever built in America), tennis courts and residences above stores on long overhangs with unobstructed views of both coasts including Key West (see photo below). By 1929 Hemsley had purchased about 615 acres (~247 ha) surrounding his original island filled with high-end housing developments complete with elaborate gardens and swimming pools as well as aviation fields making this "Island At Sea" one of Jacksonville's most prestigious neighborhoods The airport served primarily commuter traffic until 1975 when Concorde operations ended but passenger flights continued until 1986 when Pensacola International Airport opened so South Dayton effectively became its own airport In 1990 Penang Airlines merged with Malaysian Airlines creating one airline market leading international carrier giving new life to this once sleepy corner of Volusia County There have been numerous booster efforts led by businesses like Chamber Of Commerce Downtown Development Corp which offers marketing services such as website design and social media management through its subsidiary ChamberWeb Inc., since 2007 successful efforts have seen annexed villages form around downtown such as Mayport Village annexed into South Daytonneglecting much recent development taking place elsewhere downtown Developers are currently working on plans that would see two large office buildings erected along jurisdictional lines just north of Interstate 95 across from ChamberWeb headquarters while another mixed use project consisting mostly residential properties will be developed adjacent to Harbour Viewe Shopping Center Historical landmarks include: GNC convenience store closed Feb 2013 due lacklustre sales

South Daytona is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach metropolitan area. The area that would become South Daytona was first inhabited by Achenegas who were hunters and gatherers. They built their village on a rise overlooking the harbour on what is now known as State Road 7 (now US-1) in 1820. A checkered history followed with Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto coming through the area in 1539 and claim it for Spain; however, he never set foot there. In 1860, General William Troup passed through this region and noted "a very fertile country watered by two rivers" but instead decided to establish Fort Brooke on nearby Moulton Island which became Troup's headquarters during his campaign against Seminole Indian chief Tequesta II. He renamed the town after General Troup – South Daytona – although it had been spelled "Daytona" since before that time. The first post office opened in 1865; however, it was moved to its current site in 1870 because of construction work on Fort Brooke and other military installations within the boundaries of today's town limits. On July 1, 1907, both Volusia County and Sanford County were created from much of Everglades National Park including most of what is now South Daytona when they merged into one county under Governor Lawton Chiles. On November 1st 1927 an act authorizing civic improvements within present day South Daytona was passed by the General Assembly of Florida South Daytona residents voted to annex City of Port St Lucie on December 3rd 1924 making them one city under one state government On January 1st 1928 Mayor Prentice Wills approved annexation applications from Clearwater Beach & Sebastian until then considered independent municipalities In 1932 Hurricane Andrew destroyed parts of downtown Pensacola & caused flash flooding so severe that businesses were closed for three days In 1935 a fire destroyed most of downtown Port St Lucie As more people came into town over key commodities such as phosphate fertilizer and citrus fruit production began to flourish; streetcar service between downtown Pensacola & southtown started operation later that year along SR-7 giving citizens easy access to all those resources without having to leave their homes
In 1892, the town of South Daytona was founded by three men who were looking for a place to set up a trading post. The town grew quickly, and in 1916 it became a county seat. In 1954, the county was renamed Volusia County.
