South Daytona, Florida is a census-designated place (CDP) in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,512 at the 2010 census. South Daytona is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan area. South Daytona was founded in 1892 as a trading post on manatee Creek by J.D. Ferguson and other pioneers of the Daytona Improvement District. The town became an incorporated city in 1907 and continued to grow until 1970 when it merged with Sanford to form the Orlando metropolitan area. The history of South Daytona goes back much farther than that; first settled by Muscogee Indians and later by Seminoles who were forced from their homes during the American Civil War. In 1892, J.D. Ferguson established a trading post on manatee Creek just east of present-day South Daytona Boulevard for his fellow pioneer settlers looking for new land to develop after being displaced from their native Seminole Nation during the war. The post proved successful and quickly became a popular tourist destination for these early residents; Manatee Lake was renamed Fergusson Lake after him in 1896 and many businesses were built around it such as storehouses, warehouses, hotels, restaurants and motels all developed since then including several golf courses nearby which continue to be popular today among locals and visitors alike! In 1907, the city of South Daytona merged with Sanford to form one municipality under one governmentalthough there still remain considerable cultural differences between both towns due to their respective histories! As time passed though exploration began into inland areas surrounding both cities – eventually leading to what is now known as Indian River County – South Daytonians soon realized they had more than enough land within their borders not only for development but also annexation by other municipalities as well! This led togrowth once again in this small community until 1970 when it finally merged into Orlando! Though incorporation wasn’t without its struggles through incorporations involving conflict over land lines (a common occurrence during this period), overall growth has been impressive throughout its history which can be partially attributed to its location: close together two large urban areas with plenty of opportunity for investment spawned numerous businesses which have kept South Daytonites busy ever since! The region around South Daytona was heavily logged until the mid 1800s, when a combination of factors led to its development as a citrus-growing community. In 1907, the US acquired South Daytona from Spain for $20,000 and renamed it for Admiral David Dixon Porter. In 1925, South Daytona incorporated as a city and soon began to experience growth as a tourist destination. It also became an important center for air transport during World War II due to its location at the mouth of the Volusia River.
