After becoming president, Polk ordered construction of a road from Tampa to South Miami so that residents could better access trade with other parts of America. In 1860, two years after Polk’s visit, most of what is now South Miami was annexed by Fort Lauderdale, Florida as part of its efforts to become an American colony. However, due to its history as an Indian settlement, some aspects of South Miami remain untouched today including its cultural features such as pecan pie-eating contests which are still held every year on Thanksgiving Day. Additionally, some businesses still exist in areas such as Coconut Grove which are considered historical strongholds for certain groups within southMiami culture like Puerto Ricans who have lived there since before World War II while others continue to operate today despite gentrification pressures introduced by developers over the past few decades.

The area now known as Miami was part of the Indian Territory at the time, and Spanish colonists were not allowed to settle there.
