In 1892, the Miami Railroad Company built a line from Wynwood to Coconut Grove. The company became a part of the American Railway Company in 1903 and then leased by Southern Pacific Railroad in 1912. In 1916, Southern Pacific merged with the New York Central Railroad and Miami was transferred to the New York Central system. In 1941, the New York Central merged with two other companies, the Erie Lackawanna Railway and the Pittsburgh-Newcastle Railway, to form Penn Central. In 1970, Penn Central was sold to National Gulf & Atlantic Corporation and operations were abandoned in 1978.
