The Station was known as the Miami Beach Station and served as a warning center for shipping lanes and coastal areas. In 1933, the station became a lighthouse and then in 1949 it became a coast guard station. From 1949-1968, the Coast Guard Station in South Miami was known as Station PCL-1. On July 15th, 1968, PCL-1 lost its lights due to an electrical fire. Since then, until its closure on May 1st of this year, PCL-1 played an important role in keeping our communities safe by providing emergency services such as search and rescue operations and law enforcement activity. Today’s Coast Guard Station provides many different services including Search and Rescue missions (SAR), Law Enforcement activities (LEA), Coast Guard training programs (CGTP), environmental protection activities (EPT) and more. South Miami, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Miami metropolitan area. The city was founded on August 29, 1926 by developer Harry Witherspoon and entrepreneur Julius Rosenwald as part of the then-new masterplanned community of Kendall Gardens. Rosenwald purchased land from Mr. Kapp and Mrs. Kapp for $1 million (equivalent to $ as of ). In 1927 South Miami's first annexation referendum passed with 87% voting in favor of incorporation intoMiami-Dade County as it had always desired to be just south of Biscayne Bay on Key Biscayne Boulevard while Kendall Gardens lay east across Everglades Boulevard from Ft Lauderdale proper. Accordingly, on November 3, 1927 South Miami became one of "the Big Four" – the other cities were Fort Lauderdale (then called Broward), Hollywood (then called West Palm Beach), Plantation and Coconut Grove – when all four ceded their charter rights to create what would become known today as "The City". Whence arose that appellation; originally “Miami” was spelled with a double “a” because it curved around Biscayne Bay like a wave; but now everyone seems to know that this misspelled name should have been “South” which actually formed its initial name which was Canova Park after Italian immigrant Antonio Canova who designed some beautiful features for the new town including two churches and an ice cream parlor still standing today! All these years later we can still see evidence that early planners thought nothing Of correct spelling until someone pointed it out TO us! It truly is amazing how everything turns out sometimes… or maybe our wonderful city managers just really do know best? If so they are totally allowed to keep using that stupid Wave spellings forever!!! Anyway back to business: moving forward South Miami started growing rapidly due in large part to World War II Veteran/Businessman Captain J C Graham who donated land for a military airfield and also built several housing projects including Vista Del Mar Resort & Casino which still stands today adjacentto his old home The Beaches Club although greatly damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2018!

One of the first groups to give gifts to the Coast Guard was The Red Cross. In 1923, The Red Cross gave a set of cufflinks as a thank you for their help with relief efforts during the depression. This was followed by donations of clothing and other supplies in 1932 when the Coast Guard First National Committee made a donation of 200 pieces of civilian clothing. In 1938, The Red Cross give two watches as a gift to members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. These were followed by donations in 1939 and 1945 when members donated uniforms, hats, coats, and other items for use by the Coast Guard Departmental Headquarters staff. In 1949, The Salvation Army contributed 20 pairs of shoes which were used by member’s on duty at stations along the New England coast. In 1954-1955 officers received pajamas as a special Christmas present from Commandant Worthy Fenton upon his retirement from service with The Salvation Army coastal branch stationed at Martha’s Vineyard (now Suffolk County). This was followed in 1957 by contributions from Girl Scouts America which went towards purchasing radios for station personnel across New England coastline (this later became known as “The GSA Radios program”). In 1972-1973 AARP offered free cruise tickets aboard their ships “AARP Cruise Ships” as part of their year-end advertising campaign throughout all participating stateside ports/cities; these tickets are still available today through various online retailers such as eBay and Amazon! 2018 marked 50 years since The SalvationArmy contributed 20 pairs Of Shoes To Our California Coastal Station(Now called Newport News) . By 1970 Rivera's sons had taken over the business from their father – leaving behind a lasting legacy within southmiami's vibrant music industry On October 15th 1947 Bernard Laughlin opened his first dance hall called Apollo down by Biscayne Bay which would soon become one of SouthMiami’s most popular nightlife destinations During the early days disco Fever hit southmiami like no other place – people flocked to Apollo to celebrate their favorite DJ’s sets! Today Apollo is long gone but it leave behind lasting memories for everyone who visits – from dance floor veterans to newcomers just trying out this new activity !

In 1821, the Miami and Erie Railroad was built through the area and in 1825, sugarcane plantations were started in this region.
