South Miami, Florida is a city located in the southeastern corner of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 187,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. South Miami is bordered by Kendall on the west, Overtown on the north, Midtown on the east and south and Biscayne Park to the southwest. The city was founded in 1925 as Sunnyside by developer Harry Singer and named for its location on a large tract of undeveloped land just south of downtown Miami. Singer's original business venture included buying citrus trees from Mexican immigrants working off work visa in American orchards near Fort Lauderdale and shipping them to Sunnyside for processing into juice and other products. By 1933, however, Singer had lost interest in his Sunnyside development and sold all his assets back to Harry Snyder who renamed it SouthMiami Beach after himself. In 1951, Mayor Joe Carollo established a beachfront parkland reserve within City limits which became known as Miracle Mile due to its widespread impact upon commercial development along Biscayne Boulevard between Northwest Eighth Street and Northwest First Street (now NW1st St.). South Miami, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County and has been inhabited for over two centuries. The area that makes up South Miami was first settled by the Tequesta Native Americans and later became part of the Spanish empire. In 1835, Spain ceded Florida to the United States, which then divided it into three counties: Dade, Broward, and Miami-Dade. South Miami was part of Dade County until 1959 when it became part ofMiami-Dade County proper. Today, there are only a few hundred residents living in South MiamiGiallo Hospital located in the heart of townand several dozen businesses that provide services such as retail sales and accounting. The history of South Miami can be traced back to 1792 when Captain José de la Vega y Ayala founded what is now known as Stonington on a sugar plantation called Sabana del Toro. The town quickly grew thanks to its natural resources and its location next to Fort Lauderdale onthe southern coast of Florida made it an important port for trade with Central America and Asia. When Fort Lauderdale was established as a military post in 1815, the town began to decline because shipping reached Fort Lauderdale from Cuba much more easily than reaching South Miami byland route. In 1825, however, Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés discovered feasibility studies for a road through present-daySouthMiamiand invited American trader John Fitch to explore what he had found. Fitch's trip led him to believe that there were valuable saltpeter mines nearby and he proceeded to purchase rights to these mines from Menéndez de Avilés for $8 million dollars in 1830. With this new discovery came an increase in trade with both countries; by 1840, imports from Cuba had increased tenfold while exports from South America had quadrupled! In 1835 (just two years after Fitch's visit), following congressional approval, President James Kenedy authorized construction of the first railroad line through central Florida; this line would eventually become known astheKendall Line!
