In 1912, Antonio Ramos began importing fresh roasted coffee from Italy and exporting it to the United States market. He operated a small roastery near Biscayne Boulevard and Flagler Street in Kendall Square until his death in 1934. His son Manuel Ramos continued the business until 1975 when it was sold to Rudolph Grosse, who turned it into Koffee KollektivSouth America, one of the largest coffee companies in Latin America. In 1992, Grosse donated all of his assets to charity and Koffee KollektivSouth America became part of Starbucks Corporation. In 1912, developer Manuel Avelino built what became known as "Avelino's Fort" on Key Biscayne Boulevard near some remains of his original house. In 1926, Mayor Manuel Diaz ordered all public works in the city to be done within 24 hours so that money could be brought in for improvements to Dadeland Beach which had been hit hard by Hurricane Hazel. Construction began on the new Miami Arena just north of today's Everglades Museum and continued until November 8, 1926 when it was completed just in time for Mayor Diaz's inauguration ceremony inside--the only major event ever held outdoors in SouthMiami during its early years. As part of efforts to make South Miami into an attractive destination for businesses and residents alike, Mayor Diaz created "The Zone" program which saw construction begin on several high-rise buildings including One Kendall Square (now One World Trade Center), Four Seasons Hotel & Tower (now Intercontinental Airport Marriott), and Herald Place Shopping Center later followed by one building each at Lincoln Road and Northwest 7th streets before being replaced by Brickell City Centre between SW First Avenue & Second Street NW in 1978; this mall would become one of downtown Miami’s most successful attractions with over $5 billion worth of retail sales generated since its opening
