It wasn't until 1912 that the first registered coffee house in South Miami opened its doors. That same year, Dutch Schultz founded Schultz's Coffee House on NW First Street. Over time, other businesses followed suit and the area became known as "the Coffee Belt." In 1928, Harry Preuss established his own roastery and grocery store in what is now called the Preuss Building on NW Second Avenue. In 1938, Dutch Schultz's son-in-law Nelson Rockefeller bought the business and renamed itDutch Bros.' Coffeehouse & Grocery. The roaster continued to operate until 1963 when it was purchased by Selvin Brothers Incorporated. That same year, Selvin Brothers merged with American Tobacco Company (ATC) which then merged with Philip Morris Companies (PML) and finally shellacked by Reynolds American Tobacco Corporation (RAD). By 1845, English colonists had renamed it Fort Lauderdale after their home town of London and it became part of that city's official name when Broward County was created in 1907 out of what was then Dade County。 In 1925, a group led by wealthy citrus grower James Lampley purchased all of Flagler County – including South Miami – from its Cuban-American owners for $1 million dollars (the equivalent today would be about $30 million). At that time most people living in South Miami thought little about their location because they relied mostly on agriculture for their income and only few people lived near any large body of water outside mainland Cuba or Haiti due to political reasons unrelated to economic opportunity.
