South Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale–West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Miami is one of two municipalities inMiami-Dade County that were not annexed by the city of Miami in 2001; the other is Dadeland. The first residents of what would become South Miami date back to 1884 when land was donated by John Sisson and others to be used as a school ground for blacks in southwest Broward County. In 1896, when Biscayne Bay became navigable, settlers moved into what would become South Miami from parts of Kendall and Cutler counties due to its location on an easily accessible bay that could provide seafood for local fishermen. By 1920, most businesses had been established near Biscayne Boulevard and Roosevelt Roads east of today's University Drive and south of today'solphinariums (now known as SWA PAC). In 1951, while still part of Kendall County, much development occurred along State Road 2 which later became I-95; this area now includes much older homes built before construction began on I-95 which made it difficult for developers to build new homes without demolition permits orstreetcars running right past their properties on Roosevelt Roads/Boulevard. A proposal to annex nearby Dadeland failed during a referendum held on November 5th, 2001 despite overwhelming support from citizens within both municipalities who desired annexation because they sawSouth Miami as an important economic engine within their communities – making it easier for businesses and jobs to flow into the city from surrounding counties while also providing more services such as libraries and parks for residents within our neighborhoods Since annexation byMiami-Dade County took place on December 15th, 2006 many changes have taken place in SouthMiami including: growth in both job opportunities & residential prices due to access to good transportation options (including Metrorail), increasein cultural events & cuisine available throughout Greater MIA through numerous food trucks & festivals put on by various organizations such as Latin American Night Out (LANO) & Gainesville Film Festival (GFF), increased numberof library hours with expanded collection areas including the newly renovated Main Library located just north of Ponce de Leon Boulevard

South Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is part of theMiami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as South Miami was first inhabited by the Timucua tribe and their ancestors. The area was part of Spanish Cuba until 1835 when it became part of the United States following its purchase from Spain. After American independence, South Miami continued to be a part of Florida until 1898, when it became an independent municipality under Spanish control again. In 1916, Jacksonville developer Nicholas Jannone built his first home in what would become South Miami Beach on Biscayne Bayou. Jannone developed other areas including Pembroke Road and Everglades Boulevard in what is now Overtown and Little Havana neighborhoods on Thebes Avenue south of Jackson Road. In 1924, he donated land for the town's first high school which opened in 1928 as Panama West High School before becoming South Miami High School in 1938. During World War II, many Japanese Americans were interned here during the height of Pearl Harbor hysteria; they were later released and reintegrated into society afterward under terms negotiated with U.S. Army commanders (the " exclusion order"). One such person was Soichi Shimizu who founded SouthMiami Productions Company which made propaganda films for Japan during World War II with help from US military intelligence officers working through New York City's Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Shimizu also helped found Coral Gables Golf Course which still operates today as one of world's leading courses outside London’s Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club Limited
