South Miami is located in Miami-Dade County and is bordered by the Miami River to the north and east, Biscayne Bay to the south, and North Miami Beach to the west. As of 2010, it had a population of over 176,000. The area that now makes up SouthMiami was first inhabited by the Timucua people. They were displaced by Spanish colonists in 1565 and moved into what is now Overtown during the early 18th century. The area became part of the United States after Florida was acquired from Spain on October 29, 1821. The first white settlers arrived in 1795 when James Kapp purchased land from Manuel Fernandez for $1,500. By 1800, Kapp had developed a small community called "Kapow" which he renamed "South Miami". He also built a sawmill here which still stands today. In 1801–1802 Captain John Smith discovered oil shale in what is now Overtown and began drilling for oil within SouthMiami bounds with his crewmen on February 4, 1802 (the actual date has been disputed). Two months later he reported finding four barrels of crude oil but no wells or pipelines existed at that time so production did not begin until 1907 when an underground pipeline was dug beneath SouthMiami to bring oil from Jacksonville. In 1898 construction began on America's first electric streetcar line between Key Biscayne and Overtown using horses pulled carts service running until 1915 whenbrooklyn Electric Railway opened providing self-service cars at all stops along their route including one stop inside SouthMiami proper! Today’s buses connect SouthMiami with most areas of downtown as well as many other neighborhoods within Greater Miami! On November 3rd 1916 voters organized themselves into blocks called “Citizens” who wanted greater recreational opportunities such as fishing pools etc., resulting in passage of a stormwater ordinance amending zoning regulations proposed by Mayor Antonio Rivera Mason that would have allowed more development near schools while keeping open undeveloped lots used for agricultural purposes originally known as “Parkside” and later called “West Park” since it lay immediately off Flagler Street between Eighth Avenue & Seventh Streets NW then bounded by Northwest 7th street & Flagler Street NW then bounded again by Second Avenue eastbound & First Avenuewestbound; this portion lying immediately northwesterly of current day US 1st avenue NE cornering Flagler St SE excluding any lot devoted to industrial uses including present day company town site owned bySunoco energy INC.– thus becoming Southwest 2nd Ave SW cornering Flagler St SE inclusive thereby becoming Southwest 3rd Ave SW cornering Flagler St SE adjoining Sunoco Energy Inc.; finally maps included herein show street name change effective December 1st 1916 – previously West Park became East Park after developer changed title deed to include land WesterlyBoundary being less than ½ mile due westerly half way between flagler&seventh StreetsNW making annexation possible henceforth incorporated under new name: Southmiami BEACHCOMMUNE
