There have been military deployments in St. Augustine, Florida since the 1800s. The first time a military installation was stationed in the city was during World War II, when it was part of the United States Army Forces Europe. The second deployment took place in 1957 when it was part of the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force. From there, military installations have come and gone, but they all left their mark on St. Augustine as an important community and tourist destination. Today, there is an active U.S. Military presence in St. Augustine with units stationed at different locations including: Camp Blanding (an army camp), Joint Reserve Base Brightwater (the home of the Jacksonville Jaguars), Fort Myers (formerly known as Marine Barracks) and Guard Brigade Armory Annex Building (#2). These deployments allow for increased security while also providing opportunities for interactions between locals and soldiers from around the world. This increased interaction has led to many unique experiences for residents of St. Augustine which are enjoyed by everyone involved- local businesses, tourists, servicemen/women and even some who aren’t typically associated with cities or tourism attractions! One such experience that occurred during a recent deployment was a car show fundraiser hosted by Flagler County Chamber of Commerce alongside USMC barracks located just off US 1 near downtown St.[1] This event raised over $10K for veterans’ charities statewide! What better way to kick off things than by having a car show to benefit our favorite charity? It wasn’t just any old car show either- this one featured some amazing models from throughout history along with custom designed cars from our own local team! It truly was something special and definitely made a difference for those who participated!

The city of St. Augustine, Florida was founded on August 14, 1847 by the Spanish mission fathers as part of the San Antonio Missions. The town grew rapidly after being designated as a military post in 1853 and then becoming a center for sugar cane production in the region. The first white settlers arrived in what is now St. Augustine in 1861, and during the next decade the population doubled to over 10,000 people. African Americans began to settle in St. Augustine during this time as well, eventually making up about 25% of the population. In 1865, Spanish General Francisco Pérez de Leon decided to move all U.S.-controlled possessions south of Tampa Bay into Confederate hands following the American Civil War and renamed Florida Santa Fé (St Augustine). As a result of this change in policy, most black Floridians were forced out of their homes and into exile across southern Florida while their own citizens continued to reside within our borders. In 1879, however, when Santa Fé was re-established as an unincorporated community under jurisdiction of Gainesville County without Hispanic representation, most black Floridians returned home and established themselves once again within our borders. During World War II many residents chose not to evacuate due to fears that they would be drafted or sent overseas if war came to America; however, many did leave behind property and businesses that were seized by the Japanese army during their occupation of mainland Japan from 1941-1945. After Japan's surrender these assets were turned over to Allied forces who used them for civilian purposes until they were placed into trust in 1949 under United States auspices as part of the Marshall Plan program which assistance various nations recovering from World War II sanctions/debacles like Korea and Romania etc.). As a resultof postwar economic redevelopment efforts much Ofst Augustine regained its previous prosperity albeit through heavy reliance upon tourism revenue rather than traditional manufacturing/employment opportunities which has led some observers[who?]to term it "the new Saint Augustine". The area that is now St. Augustine was part of the Ten Thousand Islands, which were a group of islands located in the lower Florida Keys. The mission of San Miguel de Allende, Paraíso de la Trinidad, was founded in 1798 on one of these islands and it is said that Santiago Bautista de Anza, who was later canonized as an apostle, visited the island during his travels through Central America in 1793. Afterward, missions were set up on other islands including Santa Rosa and Dominica before finally arriving at St. Augustine in 1821.
