The United States Army Garrison St. Augustine, Florida was established on July 3, 1898 by General John J. Pershing as a station of the army in central Florida to provide troops with rest and relaxation during the Spanish-American War. The garrison was initially limited to military personnel only, but it soon became an open-air training center for American troops and their Moro auxiliaries allies fighting in the war. In 1916, the USArmy began construction of Fort Brooke which would become one of the most important artillery strongholds in World War I. The fortifications were expanded in 1924 and 1936 when Fort Pierce was constructed nearby. In 1949, St. Augustine became part of the newly created Department of Defense under President Harry S Truman. The department headquarters moved from Washington D C to St Augustine in 1951. With its new location, St Augustine also became home to Headquarters U S Southern Command which responsibility included security for all US overseas installations and units within South America and parts of Europe including NATO member nations as well as defense cooperation with other countries such as Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Inactivated on September 15th 1994 were Headquarters U S Southern Command (St Augustine)and Headquarters U S European Command (Venice). These commands were combined into CommanderinChief Guantanamo Bay Naval Station Joint Force Command on October 1st 1994 which is headquartered at Camp David Presidential Palace located adjacent to Andrews Air Force Base Maryland USA
St. Augustine, Florida is a city in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pasco County and home to the University of St. Augustine and its main campus as well as numerous other cultural institutions. The name derived from Augustin de Saint-Augustin who was born there in 1788. The first Europeans to explore what is now St. Augustine were Spanish explorers on Hispaniola in 1565–1566 led by Pedro Menendez de Avila, which included many of Spain's Caribbean possessions including Jamaica and Puerto Rico. On November 7, 1592 Giovanni Domenico Ponce de Leon discovered Florida on his way southward from Havana Cuba and named it after Saint Augustine of Hippo because he felt that the place resembled that episcopal see in Rome (Anglicanorum ecclesiae Sancti Augustini). During the American Revolution, Captain John Hawkins came ashore on Jacksonville Bay with his ship "Acadia" on July 4, 1795 while hunting Confederate Privateer General James Cook's supply vessel "Dolphin". He called this bay "the most beautiful I have ever seen." He also noted an area north of present day Jacksonville where he thought he saw fresh waterfalls; later known as Lake Worth Park. In 1821 land businessman James Kenedy bought 30 acres (12 km2) east of downtown for $1 per acre (0.50 ha). Kenedy developed what is now downtown into a commercial center around the site of his original home before moving it to its current location near First Street and Gadsden Street in 1827 when Jacksonville became a U.[1][2] In honor of King George III who had sent him as a delegate to negotiate treaties with Spain during the revolution, Kenedy renamed downtown during construction “The Royal Towne” but no one has been able to find evidence that this happened actually or even about when it actually happened—or if it did at all! St. Augustine, Florida is a city located on the eastern coast of Florida, in St. Johns County. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is home to the University of Central Florida (UCF). The area now comprising St. Augustine began as a tidal island in what is now Jacksonville Bay and was first settled by Arawak Indians in 1695 AD. Spanish missionaries arrived in 1718 and founded San Fernando de la Vega Mission on the island, which became known as Santiago de Cuba after their return from that trip. In 1821 Spain ceded control of Cuba to America following its defeat at the Battle of Buena Vista Creek and American settlers began arriving in earnest thereafter, including Isabella Angelina King who named the island for her aunt Queen Anna Catrina of Spain. After America gained independence from Spain in 1828, it decided to keep control of Cuba but sell it off to various European investors over time until it finally became an American territory on March 15th, 1959 when Fidel Castro took power and ended Cuban sovereignty within less than two months with his famous "Castro Doctrine." The city's nickname comes from Saint Augustine's role as both a religious center for Catholics (the Cathedral Churchyard contains many gravestones dating back to before Catholicism became official here) as well as a military post during World War II; although aerial photo evidence suggests there may have been some development prior thereto***** The first inhabitants of what would become St. Augustine were Arawak Indians who lived on an uninhabited island near present-day Jacksonville Bay around 1695 AD*****. The islands were later settled by Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1718 led by Father Luis Montoya *****. Father Montoya founded Santiago de Cuba mission which became known as San Fernando de la Vega mission*****. Upon their return from their travels they recommended that this new settlement be named after Our Lady of Charity or Nuestra Señora del Sacramento thanks to all she had done for them during their stay*.* * Portions surrounding Tampa also bear this name today***! As early as 1726 missionary Juan Ponce de León discovered sugarcane growing on an uninhabited island about 12 miles east shoreline called Santa Rosa*.* By 1800 sugar cane plantations had started up along much of Northeast Florida’s coastline****** while small villages continued developing inland*.* However due largely to political instability caused by British rule over portions of North America and warfare between France/Spain & British forces over Mariana Islands************* ************* ************* Portuguese explorer Diogo Dias landed at Pensacola Bay on November 5th Magellan entered Tampa Bay on February 2nd 1509 where he anchored near modern-day Clearwater Beach Heading northwest he ran into strong winds which drove him ashore at Mocama Harbor where he met local chief Escobar who told him about a large salt lagoon east side Of Fort Dickson Onboard Dias´ ship Venerable returned safely with fresh water then sailed northward next day landings Beginnings Of Indian Territory
