St. Augustine, Florida is a city in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alachua County and part of the Tampa–St Petersburg metropolitan area. The name "St. Augustine" comes from the Spanish term Santa Augustina, meaning "The Saint." The first known inhabitants of what is now St. Augustine were Indians who occupied present-day Hillsborough County before European arrival in 1565 by explorer Giovanni da Verga. In 1665 Englishman James Talbot founded Jacksonville on an island in Lake Monroe near modern Jacksonville Beach and named it after his father, James Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury (1558-1625). In 1821 St. Augustine became a U.S. port town when Mobile Bay closed to navigation because of Seminole Wars between American and Spanish forces; later that year it became one of Floridas five slaveholding counties with a government headed by planters rather than African Americans as was common elsewhere in the state until after Reconstruction following Civil War emancipation in 1865 In 1893 Stegner Anson had constructed a canal connecting Tampa Bay to north central Florida via Pensacola Bay which made it possible for shipment of goods upriver to Christmas Island (now Disney World) without crossing water; this opened up much trade with Europe which helped increase economic development during early 20th century due to increased transportation options available through coastal shipping lanes. St. Augustine, Florida is a city in Orange County, Florida, United States. The population was 66,815 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up St. Augustine was ceded to Spain by the Treaty of Paris in 1821 after the Seminole Wars. In 1907, U.S. forces burned down part of the mission complex as part of an effort to quash a rebellion against Spanish rule. In 1916–17 St. Augustine became one of several municipalities incorporated into Jacksonville as Jacksonville annexed most of Duval County eastward to make room for more housing developments integral to Jacksonville’s growth and expansion during World War II – this event also helped spur development around downtown St., which had been serving primarily as an industrial district since before Reconstruction days when white businessmen had taken control following the Civil War ended slavery within Confederate America In 1961, when Gainesville became the capital City of Florida under Governor Jeb Bush and then moved from Tallahassee due to growing statewide problems with racial segregation buses running through Gainesville racially segregated districts (the so-called “white flight”), Mayor Al Lawson reversed decades-old policy by authorizing construction on what would become known as Park Avenue/Downtown Street; much later there would be another controversial rezoneing decision turning what originally were just two blocks near Highways A1A/SR 1 into what is now Downtown/Park Avenue with warehouses being built on Waterfront Boulevard across from Naval Air Station Miramar while downtown business continued along what are now Polk Street SE and Bayou Road NW
