St. Augustine, Florida is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. St. Augustine is known for its historic district and for being the location of the first U.S. courthouse in Florida and the first American military post in what would become Florida. As a result of this history, it has been called "the crossroads of America." The area that now makes up St. Augustine was originally inhabited by Timucua Indians who lived near present-day Jacksonville on Haulcha Key[1]. Spanish traders and missionaries arrived in what is today St. Augustine between 1492 and 1509,[2] although little is known about their presence here before that time period.[3] In 1565, settlers arrived from Spain on Punta Gorda Island to establish Fort Caroline[4], which served as an early warning system against pirates operating in the area[5]. In 1795, following a purchase by Governor John Tryon from band leader Juan Ponce de León,[6] St. Augustine became part of what would eventually be named Lee County after General James Moore's victory over Spanish forces at Pensacola Bay on December 5, 1795[7]). A year later (February 8 1802), Moore's general campaign against Santa Fé resulted in his death at Cape San Felipe on February 1st during what is today considered to be one of history's largest land Montenegro invasions[]).[8][9][10][11] After years of wrangling among various stakeholders over who should control the city's boundaries – including developers interested in building streetcar lines through town – Captain Philips built Fort Philip Augustus within boundaries set by Moore just prior to his death[12]. The fort served as an artillery battery until 1907 when it was replaced with Fort Brooke.[13][14][15] In 1839, surveyor Jethro Gibbs described conditions along US 192 as "…exceedingly unhealthy" due to lack of available water and exposure to Seminole Indian attacks,[16] which led to petitions being filed with Congress requesting that a road be built between Sanford and Jacksonville so that patients arriving at nearby hospitals could be transported safely across state lines without fear of attack or capture by Seminoles; however no action was ever taken.[17][18][19] In 1849–50 construction began on Jacksonville Road (later State Road 9) connecting Sanford with Orange Park,[20][21] but progress stalled because there wasn't enough money available to complete the project effectively or build proper roads leading into or out of town:[22]- leaving patients travelling long distances westward increasingly stranded as transportation options deteriorated.* * These issues were finally resolved when money became available for road construction following passage of legislation authorizing Governor William Troupes To Build a Road from Sanford Via Jacksonville To Amelia Island

In the year 897, St. Augustine was founded by bishop Augustine of Hippo on an ancient islet in the mouth of the Mocama River. The city grew rapidly and soon became a major center for trade and culture in the region. In 910, Pope John XII named St. Augustine as Apostolic Vicar of Africa, which gave him jurisdiction over all African bishops. As apostolic vicar, Augustine helped to spread Christianity throughout much of North Africa and Europe. He also created many parishes in that area and founded two colleges—the Ambrose College in Rome (later renamed University of Notre Dame) and the cathedral of San Augustin at Carthage (later known as Valencia Cathedral). John XIII erected a basilica on this islet, which served as both the cathedral and civil parish church for most of St. Augustine's life. The first Europeans to visit St. Augustine were the Spanish in 1565. The town was founded by Diocletian in 283 AD and was named for his brother, Augustus. It was a small village at the time, but it grew rapidly thanks to its location on a navigable river and its access to rich lands. In 495 AD, the city became an imperial capital under Roman rule. The city’s huge amphitheater—the largest in the world—and its many churches were among the most impressive features of this period. In 905 AD, Muslims arrived in Florida and began to trade with natives here. The Muslims built mosques and businesses here and also developed citrus crops which helped make St. Augustine a major center of commerce during this time. In 1204 AD, King John III of England awarded land grants to several prominent figures in Florida including one called Augustinians who established what is now known as Mayport on the island of Saint Augustine (later renamed Jacksonville). In 1255 AD, Pope Gregory IX designated St. Augustine as capital of all America due to its strategic location between Europe and India (now Mumbai). Spanish traders continued to arrive until 1492 when Columbus discovered America while sailing through these waters on his journey from Spain back home: he named the area America after himself! After landing on Santa Maria de la Vega (now part of Tampa) he again named it after himself- though we’re still officially known as America! By 1500AD, both Spanish AND English had spread throughout much of North America so Gadsden County came into being on November 1st that year!
