When Europeans first arrived in St. Augustine, they found a thriving community of Native Americans living near the mouth of the St. Johns River. The indigenous people were friendly and allowed the Europeans to trade goods with them. In 1565, Englishman Nicholas Roemer discovered gold in what is now Jacksonville, Florida. The Spanish soon followed suit and started exploring this new area for mineral wealth. They discovery new land and discovered fresh water supplies that would become an important part of their empire. The city of St. Augustine was founded on April 14, 1795 by General John Taylor as a result of the Treaty of Fort Moultrie between Spain and Britain. The treaty gave Spain access to alligators in order to find saltpeter for cannonpowder; this was essential for Spanish forces in Cuba during the War of 1812. Spanish forces were stationed at Fort Moultrie until 1821 when it was surrendered to United States forces under Admiral Andrew Jackson after American victory over Mexico in the Mexican-American War (1846-48).
