It is the county seat of Alachua County and home to the St. Augustine Light Infantry Regiment (Alachua County National Guard) and the St. Augustine Police Department. The name "St. Augustine" comes from Augustin de Villanova which settled in this area in 1565 after helping to found Gainesville, Florida on Pensacola Bayou. In 1821 Santa Anna's troops burned down St. Augustine while they were besieging Fort Brooke; however, most of the town survived and shortly thereafter began growing again as a result of white settlement and industry along the bayou system around it.
