The St. Augustine National Guard was organized on February 15, 1921, in response to the Florida Revolution of 1905. The first unit was called the "Patriots' Battalion" and consisted of six officers and seventy-six enlisted men. On November 9, 1941, the National Guard was reorganized as a brigade under the command of Brigadier General James W. Hickey. On July 1, 1942, brigades were redesignated divisions and on October 1 became brigades with one colonel commanding each.
