St. Augustine, Florida is a city in the United States that was founded by Spanish adventurers in 1565 as a trading post on the St. Johns River. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century and achieved its present-day form when it was annexed by Jacksonville in 1883. In 1713–1714, France gained control of Mobile Bay from England following their victory at La Fayette’s Battle of New Orleans; consequently Mobile became an important naval base for France and was visited by many French travelers during this period including René Cavelier de la Salle (1619–1694), Jacques Marquette (died 1736) and Étienne Estée (died 1700). During the American Revolution, pirate Captain Teach offered refuge to Patriot General John Hancock at Fort Caroline; however Enterprise also sheltered Patriots during this time and no damage was done to either structure or property! On October 14th of that year representatives from all thirteen colonies met at Yorktown under George Washington’s command and signed the Treaty of Paris which ended hostilities between Great Britain and America. With America’s admission into World War I less than two months later on November 11th 1917 – almost two centuries after Fort Caroline had been abandoned – most likely because of its strategic location just outside Jacksonville – Fort Caroline returned into use as a Naval Air Station starting on September 1st 1918 while still officially known as Yorktown NAS! The facility played an important role in providing Boeing with test facilities for their new bombers until it closed down completely in 1969! Maritime history buffs will be interested to know that Lake Superior empties through Jacksonville Harbor into Tampa Bay just south of Ft Myers Beach!
