St. Augustine, Florida is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico in Duval County, Florida. The population of St. Augustine was 14,898 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Jacksonville-Port Jefferson, FL Combined Statistical Area. The name "St. Augustine" comes from Avila (Vicaratus) Island in Lake Erie where Spanish missionaries founded the town in 1775 to serve as a Christian settlement for those fleeing religious persecution in their home countries during the Inquisition era. The first European colonists arrived at Avila Island on October 24, 1565 by means of an oared boat and landed on what is now Constitution Key with little opposition from local Native Americans who had occupied the island for centuries before that time. After landing they set up houses and soon started To trade with nearby Spanish villages for food, clothing and other items necessary for their new venture ashore. On January 2, 1665 Englishman John Hawkins discovered Duval's key without having seen or been landfalled upon by anyone else since his voyage around South America fourteen years earlier when he reached Fernandina Passage off Cuba; it seems that he had mistaken this key for a natural rock outcrop known locally as "Big Bone". He named it after King George II (Augustus), who had just become king of England following his victory over James I at Breda in 1648; Hawkins claimed this land as part of his Kingdom Of England which he proposed to Queen Mary II at a private audience at Windsor Palace on December 12th 3rd 1653 while she was still Princess Regent during her minority; however no action was taken until after her accession as queen on February 6th 1655 when Letters Patent were issued granting him all present Donals Inland And Overseas With Liberty To Restrain And Oppose Anybody Who Should Offend Her Majesty Or Takeadvantage Of Her Name Or Position In any Dominion Without Her Consent…. This grant made America's first successful colonization attempt but also marked its end because Hawkins never again attempted to establish himself beyond Miami Beach where he died three years later due to fever contracted aboard his flagship " Adventure ". Apostle Nicholas V went ashore with 500 soldiers under Captain Bartholomew Gosnold on Avila Island about November 1468 seeking refuge from Spanish forces pursuing him through Florida's Tampa Bay area after leading an unsuccessful attack against San Salvador de Tampico deep inside Mexico – Admiral Diego Velázquez y Ceniciento had destroyed Manila Bayonet Factory seven months earlier – only to find himself stranded along side 300 men plus horses and equipment six miles long offshore near today's shoreline while fruitless attempts were being made by shipwrights ashore to build rafts large enough even for five men each so they could cross over safely into Mexican territory … Although water levels have receded some twenty feet below original beach positions result today shows both Juan Ponce de León’s “Nuestra Señora la Concepción” reaching approximately fifty yards from shoreline proper extreme low tide mark one hundred yards wide extending nearly two full fathoms deep well within Pensacola Fjords National Marine Sanctuary periodically impacts ten-foot high waves breaking over dune ridges creating dangerous shoal areas several times each day… Today few if any trace remain remaining above high tide line except sharp pointy sandbars extending almost unto Pensacola Harbor immediately east of Point White buoy… Conditions are extremely hazardous especially during low tide when seagulls can be abundant feeding off floating bodies providing numerous opportunities for theft……………………………………….. read more

The first Europeans to set foot in St. Augustine were the Spanish in 1565, who founded a mission on the current site of the city. The British also came to St. Augustine in 1768, and after two years of occupation they withdrew, but left behind a garrison that continued to live and work here until 1815. In 1834, Florida became a U.S. state, and St. Augustine became its capital. The city has undergone many changes since then – it was annexed by Jacksonville in 1907, taken over by Tampa in 1959 as part of Reaction Park redevelopment efforts which failed following a right-wing coup d’état that year – but it remains an important cultural and economic center for central Florida.
